As a floral arrangement instructor I have been teaching floral designs for over 30 years. The majority of my students learn flower arranging for hobby. However from time to time, we have students who want to learn for doing floral business. Even if they do not begin floral business right now, they have a kind of dream of starting their own floral business such as running a floral shop, working for a florist as a floral designer, engaging in wedding floral decorating services or teaching flower arrangements themselves.
It is fully up to students for what kind of purpose they learn floral designs. As already mentioned the majority of students learn for hobby. As far as they use flower arranging skills for hobby, I am pretty sure that they will not lose their asset. However when it comes to doing their own business, it may be necessary to make some investment. For instance if they run their own floral shop, they need to spend money for buying a floral shop or paying monthly rent (if the facility is rented) or paying employee’s salary etc. etc. Even if they minimize the running cost of their floral shop, they must spend minimum required amount to keep running a shop.
As far as their business goes well, they may be able to make profit. On the other hand, once they fail to run a business, they end up with losing money which was spent for investing to start and run a business. Namely in order to run their own business, they have to run a risk. Unless they are pretty resourceful and business savvy, it is often difficult to make profit by running their own floral shop especially during a ramp up stage.
There are tons of floral shops that are successfully making money. And at the same time, we find many shops that are going out of business. Some people want to work for a florist as a floral designer. In this case there may be almost no risk because it is not necessary to make investment to start a new business. But the amount of earnings may be quite limited although they can learn various things that must be done as a floral designer and also how to take care of customers who buy flower at a florist.
How about starting a business of wedding floral decorator ? The ideal way is to offer wedding floral services as a floral shop. But if you do not want to run any risk, you may be able to do wedding flower business without having your own floral shop. In this case, you work as an independent wedding floral decorator. Only because you have no base (such as floral shop), you have to depend on some other way for finding customers such as by depending on the internet advertising etc etc.
How about teaching floral designs by having your own floral design class ? Some of our graduates offer flower arrangement classes after completing the instructor course of our school. The majority of such people teach floral designs at their home (as a home business). In this case they do not need to make a big amount of investment for starting their own classes.
When doing floral business by making the use of flower arranging skills, you need to make a decision if or not you make initial investment for starting your own business. You have to think about which is good for you, operating with the concept of high risk high return or low risk low return ?
In the worst case after making investment, you may lose lots of money and assets when your business fails. However you never lose the skill of floral arranging no matter which way it goes, succeeds or fails.
