Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson may be the reigning WWE Champion heading into next Sunday’s Wrestlemania 29 but he is now also the champion in the movie world with his new action thriller ‘GI Joe: Retaliation’ earning the number 1 spot in America over the weekend.
According to 411Mania, the sequel to ‘GI Joe: Rise of Cobra’ starring Johnson as ‘Roadblock’ delivered after opening on Thursday, with $51.2 million with an average of $11,078 per theater from 3,719 theaters across America. Overseas, ‘GI Joe 2’ raked in $80.3 million for a total of $132 million in worldwide gross. Industry insiders were predicting the film would bring in around $100 million, so it’s already exceeding expectations despite mixed reviews. This film is on track to surpass the $152 million earned by the first GI Joe live action film and is already one of the biggest movies of 2013.
Pro Wrestling Examiner’s Perspective:
Look for WWE to tout that they have the biggest movie star in world right now as their WWE Champion on tonight’s WWE RAW. Like it or not, this is good for WWE as they are so closely associated with Johnson and his box office success. Now if only WWE Films studio could have blockbuster success like this, then that would be a real coup for Vince McMahon and company.
