Go to a doll store, such as Madame Alexander, the Tonner Doll Company, FAO Schwartz, JoAnn Fabrics, visit doll artists on their websites. Observe the look and ensemble, if any. Do you find that you are gravitating toward a particular type? Once you have established your choice on the type(s) of doll(s), then you are ready for the next step.

Choose which types of colors, hues and shades of color you like. This would include hair color and colors of the dolls’ costuming; Colors that you feel bring out the best features of a doll. Knowing the colors you like can make a difference, particularly if you want to display the doll(s) in your living space. Ask the question, do you like warm colors; yellows, oranges, reds. Do you like cool colors; blues, greens, turquoise? Or how about neutrals?
Choose What Era You Would Like
Costuming era. This is very important. So important that I have to suggest you pin this on your wall. Learn what era you would like. Another words, would you like dolls that depict the Victorian era? How about dolls of ethnic cultures; African, Native American, Indian and more? Are you a fashionista? How about fashion dolls of the 21st century.
These three steps are all about establishing the types of dolls you like. From what the doll is made of, the colors that accent the dolls’ features, to the costuming (dolls that represent an era, ethnicity or fashion)
