The long-awaited G.I. Joe sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”, was moviegoers’ top pick this Easter weekend. After its release being delayed a year (it was supposed to come out last summer), the film starring Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson had a big opening weekend, coming in first at the box office with $41.2 million. That’s still not as successful as its predecessor, however, which, like this film, left many critics and audiences with mixed opinions.
Last weekend’s number one movie, the animated family flick “The Croods”, dropped to second this weekend with $26.5 million. Tyler Perry’s latest film, “Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”, followed in third with $22.3 million. Despite being called awful and campy by most critics, so far it has achieved the same measure of success Perry’s previous films have.
“The Host” was definitely the big disappointment of the weekend. Based on a novel by Stephenie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” series, some were expecting this sci-fi story starring Saorirse Ronan as an alien caught in a love triangle to find almost as much success with the same audience. That was far from the case, however. “The Host” opened in sixth with only $11 million.
