Knoxville’s own Davis Tarwater won the gold medal in the 800-meter free relay at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It has been fun to watch his journey to success on the world’s biggest stage. He continues to have a strong, positive presence in the Knoxville community.
Davis, and former triathlete Eric Bell, are behind the Rev3 5K Glow Run (May 3) to raise money for former University of Tennessee swimmer Nicole Woods and her sister, who were seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombings. All proceeds will go to their medical bills. You can participate, get more information and donate here.
Recently, Jesse Smithey and I were joined in-studio by Olympic gold medal winning swimmer Davis Tarwater on the “News Sentinel Sports Page” radio talk show on “The Sports Animal” (WNML) in Knoxville.

Here are some quotes from our visit with Davis Tarwater in-studio.
On his relationship with Nicole Gross and wanting to help…
“She was working at the pool that I trained at in Charlotte, so I got to know the family a little bit. As a swimmer and as somebody that felt like they had some leverage in the situation, I felt like it was really important for me to get on-board to help and to do anything I could.”
On the big picture meaning of the event after the bombings…
“We’re all Americans here. We’re not going to stand for senseless acts of terror, and we’re not going to be dissuaded by fear. I think it’s a really powerful event.”
On finally joining Twitter, but not being sold on it yet…
“I guess I’m supposed to ask for followers? I think that this event is one that finally got me over the hump. I can now use my Twitter.”
Serious and joking, thoughts on Ryan Lochte…
“We’ll see how long his (TV) show goes for. I actually talked to him last night. He’s back into training full speed. They’ve got the world championships at the end of the summer. He’s going to be a really key player as Team USA moves forward, especially in the absence of Phelps and a lot of other guys. It’s important that while he elevates the profile of the sport that he’s also ready to go when it comes to win medals. I think he will be. He’s a really tough guy. He’s out hob-knobbing with the Kardashians. I don’t know what to say about that.”
