It can be really overwhelming to pick a restaurant for a fun night out or even a casual date. With so many options available, it’s hard to find a restaurant that is both trendy and delicious while also being affordable.
District Commons, part of the Passion Food Group, located in the Foggy Bottom District in Washington, DC offers a variety of reasonably priced small plates, a fantastic raw bar, and a long list of wines by the glass, craft beers, and specialty cocktails all in an upscale, modern, yet cozy ambiance.
The restaurant featured seasonal entree options, but to really get your moneys worth, share a couple of the small plates. The food is just as good, you can try different flavors, and you don’t leave feeling full and broke. With summer upon us, enjoy your dinner outside in the restaurant’s comfortable outdoor seating area.
After perusing the menu you’ll find a variety of items from their raw bar including fresh oysters, clams, and shrimp, a number of flatbreads for $12, 3 types of mussels for $12, and tempting appetizers all under $15. There is so much more choose from than just their entrees, which are fantastic by the way.
For a date worthy meal start with the perfectly crispy fried oysters with tangy and sweet blue cheese slaw and topped with Franks Red Hot remoulade. The flavor of the oysters is crisp and fresh with just the right amount of batter. Follow up with either the charcuterie board or one of their mussel dishes. The ultimate best option is the Thai red curry mussels with golden pineapple, but not everyone enjoys the exotic flavors of curry. To play it safe on a date, order the white mussels in a house lemoncello, with oven cured tomatoes in a delicate and velvety lemon thyme cream. Each mussel dish is served in individual La Creuset’s with a fresh baguette. This refreshing yet satisfying sauce must be enjoyed with the fresh baguette, it’s that delicious.
To finish of the meal you can choose one of their exciting flatbreads. Large enough to share, and there may be some leftover to take home. Try the roasted sweet pepper flatbread with Pipe Dream Farms goat cheese, basil pesto, and roasted pine-nuts. Light and crisp dough topped with a variety sweet bell pepperswith a savory basil pesto sauce and topped with creamy goat cheese. The perfect summer treat.
That is more than enough for two people to share, but if you’re still feeling hungry, order the pretzel baguette for $2. A large warm doughy pretzel baguette served with this combination of grainy mustard and butter for spreading. You won’t be disappointed.
This restaurant has so much to offer, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and you will leave feeling happy. Ordering and sharing a few items from the small plates menu is a great way to enjoy a variety of items while keeping your bill down and your belly happy.
