Oregon music festivals heat up the landscape with symphonic ear candy statewide each year, so are you ready?
Get a mountaintop high as you serenade the stars in Sisters, pick-a-thon to your pleasure deep in the forest green of Happy Valley, cruise Willamette River’s waterfront blues, tune in to MusicFestNW on the steps of Portland’s living room at Pioneer Courthouse Square and experience high brow classical harmonies cradled in the Rogue River valley of Southern Oregon.
Let’s get started with my list of the top 5 music festivals in Oregon.
Waterfront Blues Festival held over the Fourth of July weekend rocks the city of Portland all day and night each year. My favorite (Among many masterful musicians) this year is headliner John Hiatt and The Combo. Hiatt is an accomplished singer, songwriter, master performer and he will not let you go until you reach music nirvana. Absolute must hear and see Hiatt. P. S. Bring canned food for donation driven music fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank.
Pickathon Music Fest since day one continues to contemplate the idea behind one simple question, what does it take to be the best weekend festival of the year for music lovers? This year’s answer: Andrew Bird. P.S. Pickathon happens in Happy Valley the first weekend in August just 15 minutes south of Stumptown.
Britt’s Classical Music Festival located in Jacksonville founded in 1963, features a professional orchestra of 90 musicians who come from all over the United States for a three-week stay in Southern Oregon. Internationally renowned guest artists such as Emanuel Ax, Pinchas Zukerman, Midori, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Christopher Parkening, Lynn Harrell, Samuel Ramey and Frederica von Stade join the orchestra each August to present a series of extraordinary concerts under a canopy of stars. This year Britt’s 2013 Classical Festival will introduce three Music Director candidates to the Britt community: Mei-Ann Chen, Teddy Abrams and David Danzmayr. P.S. Make this music festival a camping vacation. Why? Because there is so much to see and do in the area you won’t want to miss a thing.
Sister’s Folk Festival held each year the first weekend after Labor Day in September is a singer and songwriter’s delight. 2013 will be the year to hear Lake Street Dive, Ryan Montbleau Band, John Fullbright and many others. P.S. The singer songwriter camp held at Camp Caldera three days before the festival is a super awesome way for guitar players to craft that perfect song they’ve dreamed of writing they’re whole life. Camping out is okay but the bed and breakfast scene in Sisters is better.
MusicFestNW is Portland’s answer to SXSW a music festival held in Portland’s sister city Austin, Texas. The MFNW music scene mayhem happens in venues all over Portland every September right after Labor Day. P.S. On one hand MFNW competes with the Sisters Folk Festival time frame and on the other hand it provides a diverse music menu for those who love head banging rock and roll. You get to decide what’s your on music playlist.
