With three bags over 30, the Delta trophy in the U.S. Angler’s Choice West Delta Pro Team event yesterday went to the team of Travis Huckaby and Hunter Schlander holding the winning weight of 31.56. A big bass of 9.29 anchored their five. “We got a limit about 13 or 14-lbs in the morning on spinnerbaits and crankbaits,” said Huckaby in a post weigh-in interview. “At about 10:30 a.m., I got a seven on a Senko and then at 11:00 a.m. I got the nine on a jig. After that we culled up the rest of our fish through the day with the jig and the Senko.”
Huckaby reported the better fish biting after a long slack tide that caused a lull in the bite. They got all their weigh fish on a brown jig and both wacky and Texas-rigged, weightless Senkos in a dark color. Although reports are coming in that bass are being seen up on the banks, Huckaby stated they concentrated on a pre spawn pattern, targeting areas in 6- to 8-feet of water on edges of weeds and points in the Central Delta. “We hit 15 areas and only two produced fish,” he added. “It is very location-related, right now.”
Also with 30-plus bags were the teams of Art and Bryan Roland and bass fishing legend Dee Thomas with partner Dan Daniels. The Roland’s bagged 30.52 and the Thomas team sacked up 30.38 for the day. Both reported tying on a drop shot for their fish.
Huckaby and Schlander beat out the 21 boat field and earned over $2,100 for their efforts. Huckaby sent a special thanks to his sponsors Navionics, Humminbird, River2Sea and Phenix Rods.
