There are a lot of games out there whose proliferation of releases is mirrored by mobile device growth and digital entertainment technology. There is a lot of talk about the changing face (users) of gamers. Whether you are a `Sophisticate’ or a `novice’, there is a lot of game play across the web.
The depth of art is astounding. From anime to iconic brands, the digital brush has evolved from a 2D presence to a 3D phenomenon. Herokon Online a next generation cross-platform MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) promotes the invention of detail and creative engagement. Maybe I am paying attention to an audience market that demands the cinematic quality of a large screen audience or it could be a homage to the `The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, a Warner Bros. Pictures (2012) where popularity of medieval scenes evoke an escape hatch.
You may not know that the games that you play is created by Silver Style Studios GmbH houses such titles like Soldiers of Anarchy, Everlight, The Fall – Last Days of Gaia, Simon the Sorcerer series.
I spoke with Arup J. Paul, the Marketing Director and Digital Brand Evangelist who launched 8 MMORPG games in 7 countries including Herokon-Online.
Marianne Pfeifer: What is the sustainability of MMORPG markets today? What are the trends we can see in 2013?
Arup J. Paul: Sustainability totally depend content of the game and the depth of gameplay it has to offer, it doesn’t matter how technologically advance the game is or how amazing looking graphics it has but if the gameplay is not fun and the content is not exciting it won’t work.
I believe 2013 onward it’s all about cross-platform connected play. A MMORPG that can be playable cut across PC browser, Tablet (iOS and Android) simultaneously. With in-house developed LightStream Engine technology Herokon Online is paving the way for cross-platform connected MMORPG.
Marianne Pfeifer: Let’s talk about the creative concept behind Herokon and the script to screen process. Could you tell me how this game came about?
Arup J. Paul: Herokon Online based on Europe’s one of the oldest Pen & Paper RPG called The Dark Eye. We at Silver Style recreated entire TDE universe (Aventuria) in a MMORPG format for first time. It was mammoth task to create Aventuria in such a scale it has never been done before. We followed The Dark Eye rule books almost each and every step of creation, in fact some of the notable The Dark Eye authors are also writing our game quests.
Arup further explained how the studio is truly committed to TDE user community but at the same time its long term goal is to make Herokon Online accessible to any RPG lovers, who appreciate high quality story driven gameplay. Herokon will offer complete customizable 3D character on Adobe Flash that is unparalleled in in the current web flash games. I can assure you Herokon Online will set a new standard how we perceive Flash as serious game development tool. The senior executive believes that with a title like Herokon it is here to disrupt the market.
Marianne Pfeifer: On the current issue of games and violence: Would you like to comment? What can studios do besides use the entertainment rating? What can parents do?
Arup J. Paul: I personally think games are not the problem, our perception towards games technically biased. Games are like any other entertainment medium available on the current market but it’s always easy to put all the blame on the games without trying to find out root of the cause.
No studios can ensure how much and when user will consume the content, it’s up to us to decide how we would like to get entertain. Our generation has a problem of over consumption and in this case games are not the exception. If parents take care kids are not playing way too much game it’s already good, like you wouldn’t like your kinds to watch all the time sit front of the TV, do you?
Marianne Pfeifer: Social content and player engagement on mobile devices is a gain for the industry. What about virtual reality environment?
Arup J. Paul: We’re still far away from such things. First of all mobile industry has to think and innovate about new device form factor, I believe we’re reaching a road block here in terms of design and physical shape of today’s mobile device. Once we get there, I guess, there will be a lot we can do with VR (virtual reality) environment.
