On the season 3 finale of “The Walking Dead,” which aired on March 31, Carl made a decision that shocked Hershel and has Rick worried about what kind of young man his son is turning into. Did Carl do the right thing or is he turning too hardened by the zombie apocalypse? Will Carl change by the time season 4 airs?
During the season 3 finale, Carl, Hershel, Beth and baby Judith hid outside the prison walls where they could protect the baby and be safe. Carl was already not happy about still being treated like a child when he feels he should be treated as an equal. He wanted to stay and fight, but Rick would not allow it. As the Governor’s army fled, a teenage boy ran from the prison, not wanting to be a casualty. He ended up running into Carl, who pointed his gun at the boy.
The teen appeared to be handing his gun over when Carl suddenly shot him. Hershel was shocked and believed that it was unnecessary, that the teenager was scared and was handing his weapon over. On the season 3 finale of “The Walking Dead,” Hershel told Rick that Carl “gunned him down.” Carl told his father that he could not take that chance.
Nobody knows what that teenager would have done, but when he was told to drop the gun, he should have dropped it to the ground instead of attempting to hand it to Carl. He was getting a little too close and he may have waited for Carl to grab it, then opened fire if Carl had not done what he did. On the other hand, he may have been too scared. Fans will never know because the teen was killed.
While it seems that Carl may have gone overboard, he was absolutely right about not taking that chance.
This event brings up other questions, though. Is Carl simply angry about being treated like a child even though he has tried to prove himself as an equal? Is everything that has happened finally coming to a head? He had to deal with his mother dying and he insisted on shooting her in the head himself after she died during childbirth. He never did get to fully grieve and Rick was dealing with his own demons. Then with the stress of Woodbury, everyone around them dying, having his childhood stolen by the zombie apocalypse and going through puberty… it is a lot for anyone to handle much less a kid. On season 4 of “The Walking Dead,” will Carl end up losing control?
A previous spoiler for season 4 revealed that someone Rick trusts will betray him. Is Carl’s anger so intense that he would betray his own father? It could very well go down like that. After all, Carl is getting to be a teenager now, which is a hard enough time without the zombies.
What do you think Carl is going to be like on season 4 of “The Walking Dead?”
