May 4 is always a special day in the hearts of geeks. “May the fourth be with you,” is commonly spoken among nerds whose alliance lies with “Star Wars.” This year, May 4 is not only the unofficial “Star Wars” holiday, but it’s also Free Comic Book Day!
Comic book shops around New England will be giving away FREE comic books! Stores limit the amount of free books to usually around five per customer. The comic books are specially made for this occasion. To find a store, use the handy Free Comic Book Day “shop locator.”
Free Comic Book Day offers fans a peak at what will be offered on their website. Selections range from kid-friendly fare like “Sesame Street” to zombie favorite “The Walking Dead.”
New England Comics is hosting comic book creator appearances at their Quincy, Allston, Brockton, Norwood, Malden, Brookline, and Harvard Square locations. Dennis Hopeless, writer for “Avengers Arena” as well as “Cable and X-Force,” will be at the Brockton location from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Kids will want to bring their parents to the Brookline store in Coolidge Corner to meet the “Adventure Time” artist team Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Jeff McClelland, writer of “The Tick” will be pulling double duty, appearing at the Quincy shop from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and then the Harvard Square store from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
With locations all over New England, Newbury Comics will be partaking in Free Comic Book Day with $1 comic book grab bags and more. Down in Bellingham, MA, Rubber Chicken Comics will have the 501st New England Garrison present to honor Star Wars day and Free Comic Book Day. Craig Rousseau (“Batman Beyond”) and Jack Purcell (“Green Arrow”) will be appearing between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Also on May 4, Rubber Chicken Comics is having a sidewalk sale with 50 cent comics. Inside the store, they will be offering 25% off all products.
Up north, Double Midnight Comics in Manchester, NH will host Eric Powell, creator of “The Goon” and actress Amy Okuda from the fabulous web series “The Guild.” A slew of other artists will be in attendance. And that’s not all! Double Midnight Comics is having a sidewalk sale, costume contest, and a BBQ! Check out their Facebook event page for details and times.
Not to be outdone, Jetpack Comics is having a BBQ and a scavenger hunt on Free Comic Book Day! Ed McGuinness, Kevin Eastman (co-creator of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”), Joe Harris, Matt Talbot, Christopher Golden, Thomas Sniegoski, Newburyport’s Tyler James (co-creator of ComixTribe) and many more comic book folks will be at Jetpack Comics to celebrate the occasion.
