Jessica Brown Findlay is probably best known for her role as Lady Sybil Crawley on the TV series “Downton Abbey,” but now she’s starting to get attention for her part in a movie that definitely didn’t call for her to be prim and proper. According to a March 26 report by Us Weekly, Findlay says that she regrets shooting a topless scene in the movie “Albatross.”
In the 2011 movie, the 23-year-old brunette beauty played a rebellious teen that has an affair with an older married man. Her role in “Albatross” called for her to shoot a topless scene, but now the actress realizes that she could have said no to doffing her top. Here’s what Jessica told Radio Times about the role: “To be honest, ‘Albatross’ was naivete and not knowing that I could say no. I had no idea what was going to happen and thought I was going to be shot from behind.”
It was Jessica Brown Findlay’s first movie role, so the young unknown was probably scared that she’d lose her job if she refused to shoot a scene that the script called for. However, unless a movie is completely focused on sex like “50 Shades of Grey,” nudity is usually just gratuitous and can easily be cut out.
But Jessica’s regret didn’t stop her from getting topless again — she also flashes some flesh in the miniseries “Labyrinth,” which is about a search for the Holy Grail. She said this about her decision to show some skin again: “In ‘Labyrinth,’ it is a very fleeting moment that we shot in one take, but I did find it very odd being naked in front of lots of people. I think it’s awful that women get so criticized about their bodies.”
So since it sounds like Jessica is worried about what people will think of her body, it should be fairly obvious that she doesn’t plan on doing a nude scene again. However, she does offer this advice for other actresses who are going to strip down: “If you’re going to do a nude scene, be honest and natural. I was drinking pints and eating burgers.” Those pints probably do come in handy when you’re taking your clothes off in front of a bunch of strangers.
Jessica Brown Findlay’s comments should serve as a cautionary tale for other young actresses out there who are thinking about signing on for movies that feature nude scenes. The actress that gets cast as Anastasia Steele in the “50 Shades of Grey” movie is going to have to show a lot of skin, so hopefully all the young hopefuls for the role read Jessica’s comments before deciding to pursue the part — the actress who signs on for the movie might not be ready for something so raunchy and might regret the role even if it does make her rich. So perhaps Emma Watson made a very smart move by saying that she’s not interested, and it sounds like Jessica also won’t be pursuing the part.
Luckily, Jessica is finding out that she doesn’t have to flash any flesh to score big parts, and she’s got plenty of time to pursue movie roles now that her “Downton Abbey” character is deceased. Jessica recently worked with Amy Adams, Garrett Hedlund, and Terrence Howard on the drama “Lullaby,” and she’s starring alongside Will Smith, Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, and “50 Shades” favorite Matt Bomer in the movie “Winter’s Tale.” So take heed, ladies — you don’t need to flash your chest to attract a gaggle of gorgeous guys.
It’s just a shame that Jessica drew unwanted attention to her topless scene by talking about it.
