A new — or old, depending on your point of view — trailer for the upcoming film “Pacific Rim” hit the Internet on Monday. The footage originally debuted at Wondercon in late March, but was not released to the wild until Monday.
It follows closely the recently revealed poster for the film.
The movie is Guillermo del Toro’s first directing job since 2008’s “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.” Reports are that he is already working on at least the script for a sequel.
Wikipedia’s synopsis for the film is:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea, a war begins that takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon is devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers prove nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.
On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Based on a screenplay by Travis Beacham, the film focuses on giant monsters named Kaiju and giant human-controlled (and humanoid-appearing) robot weapons called Jaegers. The Jaegers can vary in design, and at least one of the ones shown in a prior trailer has four arms, not two.
In this new footage, we see more backstory. We also see more fighting. We — finally — learn that, at least for a time, mankind’s Jaegers win. Then — they start to lose.
The Jaegers are operated in a manner similar to some anime series and films, responding to the movements of their neural-bridged co-pilots. In other words, the pilots walk themselves in order to make a Jaeger walk. They punch to make a Jaeger punch.
Idris Elba’s speech, toward the end of the video, channels “Independence Day.” He says,
Today, at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen to believe in each other. Today, we face the monsters that are at our door. Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!
The film will hit 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on July 12. The movie stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff.
