The Texas REAL ID bill, considered by many in the Lone Star State as horse manure, is scheduled to be heard on May 2, 2013, before the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee in Austin.
REAL ID is like a dead horse that won’t stay dead, which is why libertarians nationwide keep beating on it repeatedly until it finally stops kicking and gets carted off to the glue factory.
Texas House Bill 3199 is the designated draft horse intended to haul Texans closer to compliance with the REAL ID Act, an overreaching 2005 federal law that mandates every state must turn their drivers licenses into National identification cards.
The cards will be required to include a color photo and biometric information such as retina scans, fingerprints, DNA information and RFID radio tracking technology for every man, woman and child in America.
The Bill, according to Texans for Accountable Government (TAG), “directs Texas DPS to collect personal information and biometric data of certain groups of Texans at the time of drivers license application, and to maintain this data in an electronic database.”
The people at TAG, like concerned citizens everywhere, point out that the required RFID chip embedded in the drivers licenses “would be machine readable, allowing a person with an RFID reader and decryption savviness to gain access to this information.”
Not to mention that it violates everyone’s privacy rights by treating human beings like horsemeat.
While the bill pretends to be a horse of a different color – it applies “only” to applicants for government benefit programs (taxpayer-funded welfare handouts) and “first responders and other emergency personnel” – it’s actually a Trojan horse that will eventually burn the government’s brand into everybody’s hide.
Dallas Libertarian Examiner took Texas legislators to task two years ago with an article, “Texas Senate wimps out, passes REAL ID,” for not having enough horse sense to kill it.
Meanwhile Sheila Dean, Dallas Libertarian Examiner’s Special Correspondent on National ID and Surveillance Issues, has tirelessly horsewhipped supporters of this intrusive legislation at her Beat the Chip website.
TAG urges everyone to vigorously lobby their reps to kill HB 3199. These are the Metroplex area Reps along with their Austin phone numbers serving on the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee:
Rep. Dan Flynn — (512) 463-0880
Rep. Kenneth Sheets — (512) 463-0244
Rep. Ron Simmons — (512) 463-0478
All horsing around aside, libertarians want this bill put down for good.
