CNN reported on Sunday, March 31, 2013, that a community in Texas is currently on edge after a district attorney and his wife were shot to death at their home on the evening of Saturday, March 30, 2013. This is the same DA that said he would put away the “scum” who killed a colleague of his two months ago.
Kaufman County Judge Bruce Wood said that he believed there to be a “strong connection” between the slayings of Mike and Cynthia McLelland and the shooting death of Kaufman County Assistant DA Mark Hasse.
Hasse was killed on his way to work back in January of this year. Hasse and McLelland “worked on similar cases very closely,” said Wood.
The mayor of Kaufman, TX, William Fortner, told CNN that he believed the men were targeted by some seeking revenge.
“That’s the logical conclusion, and I don’t have any information that directs me to think that’s the case, but that’s what you would assume under the circumstances, since they targeted two people from our prosecutors.”
As of now, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office will not officially state if they believe the killings are connected or not.
“I can’t say that,” Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes told reporters. “No, we have nothing indicating that for sure.”
Authorities found the the bodies of the McLellands in their home in Kaufman County, just east of Dallas. Two months ago, McLelland vowed to find the people that killed Hasse.
“I don’t know of anyone who would want to cause him harm,” Fortner said. “As far as I could tell, he was doing a really good job as a district attorney.”
Security has been heightened for all those that work in the courthouse. The Kaufman County district attorney’s office will officially be closed on Monday, Apr. 1, 2013. Precautions are being taken to protect other elected officials.
