2013 saw the first Steampunk themed cruise, and organizers say it was such a success that they’re already planning ahead for 2014!
Don’t know what Steampunk is? Or why you would want to go on a Steampunk Cruise? Education time! Dictionary.com describes ‘Steampunk’ as “a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world.” (Wikipedia gives you a much more in depth explanation here)
Basically, imagine a 19th century world, where technology has moved far beyond the levels that it actually did, but from a steam powered basis. Add in the clothes of that era, and you’ve got a pretty good start. At this point, it goes as far as your imagination.
The 2014 cruise will be aboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas, and departs Bayonne, New Jersey on February 23rd. Over the next week, the ship will cruise down the east coast, stopping at Port Canaveral, Florida, Nassau, Bahamas, and Coco Cay, Bahamas before returning to port on March 2.
The website lists many special events include a ‘High Seas Ball‘, ‘Captain’s Formal Night‘, various musical performances, and midnight swims with ‘Mermaid Kiara’. There will even be a Steampunk film festival at sea.
Special guests on the cruise include:
- G.D. Falksen – author, lecturer, public speaker and MC. One of the most recognizable figures in the steampunk literary genre and it’s subculture.
- Mary Robinette Kowal – author. Campbell and Hugo Award winner. Also a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards. She is also a professional puppeteer and voice actor.
- This Way To The Egress – musical group. Weaving visual antics with eclectic sounds creating an experience unlike any other in their genre.
- Tasha Deeh – certified by the Royal Academy of Dance in London. More than 18 years of training in ballet, she also incorporates other dance disciplines into “fusion” style acts and choreography.
You can get details of the cruise by visiting the website. They also have a Facebook page with lots of pictures and comments from this year’s attendees.
