World Circus Day was established in 2010 by Princess Stephanie of Monaco, with the oversight of the Fédération Mondiale du Cirque. It occurs on the third Saturday of April every year. SpinFest, Creative Motion’s monthly gathering of circus skill enthusiasts, was one of two Texas events officially recognized by the Federation for 2013’s celebration.
SpinFest typically draws a fairly large crowd, but World Circus Day seems to bring everyone out of the woodworks. You could hardy take two steps at the Eastside Plaza in Richardson without having to dodge a hula hoop, juggling club or spinning poi. Looking around, you could see stilt walkers, jugglers on balancing spheres, and clowns in full makeup.
As usual, though, this was not a spectator event. Passers-by were encouraged to pick up a hula hoop or juggling balls and give them a try. For those who caught the hoop dancing bug, Jess Hoops was on hand to provide handmade hula hoops, or take orders for custom hoops.
Take a look at the slideshow for photos of the event. If this looks like something you need to check out, you won’t have to wait for next year’s World Circus Day. SpinFest happens every month on the third Saturday. Exact times can vary with the season, so check out the web site for more details.
