The Dayton Broncos won a 1-0 hard earned victory over the Crosby Cougars in dramatic style on Monday night in Huffman, TX to claim a District 19-4A baseball playoff berth.
With two outs in the seventh and Dayton clinging to a 1-0 lead, Broncos reliever Timothy Wehmeyer pitched his way into and out of trouble to secure a playoff berth for the Broncos. After retiring the first two batters, Wehmeyer gave up a hit to Crosby’s Jonathan Riffle and then back to back walks to Hunter Hearn and Mario Sequera bringing the Cougars most dangerous hitter to the plate in the person of Tyler Davenport. Davenport was one for two plus a walk in three appearances but Wehmeyer had no place to put him. The Bronco lefthander disposed of Davenport on a called third strike sending Dayton to the 2013 high school baseball playoffs beginning Thursday night against Nederland.
Dayton starter Bradley Sowell pitched out of jams in the first and second innings but escaped unscathed to keep the game scoreless. In the first, Sowell stranded Sequera at third and Davenport at second and then in the second left Jeff Bliek standing at second. After that Sowell just got stronger. Throwing 37 pitches in the first two innings, it appeared it might be a short night for the Bronco right-hander but he turned it around throwing just 38 pitches over next three and a third innings before giving way to Wehmeyer in the sixth with one out.
Meanwhile Crosby hurler Austin Hearn matched him pitch for pitch retiring eight of the first nine batters he faced before running into two out trouble in the third. Hearn started the inning setting down Tristan Baughman and Cody Chadwick before lead-ff hitter Bryce Armstrong beat out an infield hit. Sequera then scorched an 0-2 pitch into right field scoring Armstrong who had been running with the pitch all the way from first giving Dayton a 1-0 lead. Little did either team know but that would be all the scoring on this night.
Sowell’s impressive pitching line included five and a third innings allowing four hits with four strikeouts and two walks with no runs.
Hearn was nearly as impressive hurling three and a third innings striking out five with no walks and just one earned run.
Davenport who relieved Hearn finished his high school career throwing two and two thirds innings with five K’s, one walk, one hit and no runs.
Blake Schmidt collected two of the Broncos five hits to lead all hitters but no hit was bigger than Sowells two out double in the third driving in the game’s only run.
Riflle led Crosby hitters with a two for threwe night at the plate.
With the win, Dayton will face Nederland in the bi-district round of 2013 Texas high school baseball playoffs. The best of three series begins in Dayton on Thursday night May 2nd at 7PM. Game two will take place in Nederland on Friday night at 7PM and an if needed a game three will be played in Nederland on Saturday at 1PM.
