It’s true, having a consistent business blog is valuable if done properly. But, how do you know if your business blog is properly optimized for the search engines? We’ve devised a list of SEO items that should be utilized every time you write and post to your blog. Below are a few simple steps you can follow to unsure your business blogging efforts are SEO friendly.
Step One: Choose a writing and publishing timeline for your blog posts. If it’s easier, you can decide to write a few blogs all at once, save them as drafts and schedule a time for them to be published at a later date. This especially works well during the busier weeks, when you know you won’t be able to fit anything else into your schedule. Whatever strategy you employ for creating blog posts, make certain that your blogs are published regularly (at least once a week) and on a consistent schedule so that the audience and search engines will know when to expect your company’s blog updates.
Here are a few themes to consider for your blog post:
• Sharing your expertise with your audience.
• Telling your readers about noteworthy events happening in your company.
• Marketing new services or products (but don’t be too pushy).
• Newsworthy pieces from your field of expertise that your audience would find interesting.
• Personal interests, hobbies, or local community involvement should be written about with care. These subjects need to be tied in to why they’re important to your business. For instance, if you are passionate about running and participate in marathons, you could write a blog about “What long distance running has taught me about business.” Readers love creative takes on stories, so be creative.
Determining the proper content for your blog is important, not only to keep your audience interested, but also to help the search engines determine how to rank your website.
Identify keywords that are related to your company. Be sure to select one primary word or keyword phrase that you’ll be able to use repeatedly throughout the blog, and one or two secondary words or keyword phrases as support. An excellent resource for discovering keywords with significant search volume is Google’s keyword tool.
Step Two: When you’re writing your blog, make certain to consider the following.
• Title your blog with something catchy that contains the primary keyword toward the beginning. Titles should have less than 65 characters and should preferably display as an <H1> tag once the page is published. Most blogs will also duplicate the blog title as a “title tag,” making the structure of the blog title that much more important. Stay away from obscure titles as much as possible and structure the blog title in a way that you think readers would search for your blog post.
• Use the primary keyword phrase in the first paragraph and then evenly disperse it throughout the blog. However, don’t overdo the use of keywords. Your blog should be easy to read and informative to your audience without sounding overly repetitive.
• Play around with keyword variations, so you don’t feel as if your blog is stating the same keyword phrase repeatedly.
• Insert one or two links that will direct your readers to additional internal sources on your website, social media, or other blog posts.
• Use captions and descriptions for your blog images and videos that are keyword rich. Image files within your blog need to be named and have an alternate text description to tell the search engines what the image is.
• Include (and optimize) a minimum of one or two images or videos in every blog. If at all possible, use original pictures taken by your company. If that’s not possible, Google’s image search serves as a great tool. By using Google’s advanced image search, you’re able to search for pictures that are free to share or alter commercially without violating any copyrights.
As a final note:
• Be sure to spend the extra time to appropriately categorize your blog post and select tags that are pertinent to the subject matter. This helps your audience search for and recognize topics that you’ve blogged about. It also helps the search to better determine what your blog post is all about.
• You may also want to consider using a few free SEO plug-ins if your website or blog is built on WordPress. Plug-ins like Yoast SEO can help you to easily incorporate more SEO elements within each blog post.
