NC Sierra Club’s Guide to the Jocassee Gorges
By Bill Thomas
Published by NC Chapter of the Sierra Club, 1998
This is a small, 16-page publication (with 4 of those pages being color photos), which can be difficult to find. Some local bookshops have been known to carry it but, if that fails, you can get them directly from the NC Chapter of the Sierra Club in Raleigh (919-833-8467).
The guide covers several topics related to the Gorges. They are:
- Definition of the region
- Plant Life
So, this really isn’t a waterfall guide but, by default, it is because of the singular, spectacular section – the trails. The author has taken the USGS Reid quadrangle map and annotated it with the locations of many features in the Gorges, both natural and man-made. He then plotted on the map seven major trails.
The trails are:
- Horsepasture River
- Grassy Ridge/Chestnut Mountain Road
- Bearwallow Creek
- Toxaway River
- Auger Hole Road
- Cane Brake Road
- Foothills Trail
Given that most of the trails in the Gorges are not blazed, having this amount of annotated detail on a USGS topo map makes this a tremendous asset to anyone hiking the gorges in search of waterfalls.
