“Revenge” returned on March 31 with the highly-anticipated new episode, “Masquerade.”
This suspenseful installment begins six weeks from last week’s episode, in which Padma (Dilshad Vadsaria) falls into the Initiative’s hands during Aiden (Barry Sloane) and Nolan’s (Gabriel Mann) failed rescue attempt. Nolan begins a desperate search for his lady love, even employing a private detective, and their combined efforts come up empty.
Several plot threads converge on the night of the Graysons’ annual Halloween masquerade ball. Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) is spooked by an RSVP from the son she gave away, Emily (Emily VanCamp) turns up at the gala as Daniel’s (Josh Bowman) date, and Aiden confronts Trask, who leads him to discover Padma’s dead body. Aiden kills Trask on the spot to avenge Padma and his sister, and as a show of justice to Nolan.
In the midst of all the turmoil, it seems like a silver lining emerges when Trask tells Daniel he’s liquidating all of his assets and pulling out of Grayson Global. Daniel sees it as a win, but Aiden and Emily realize Trask is preparing for phase two of his plan. They vow to figure it out and try to stay one step ahead of him before it’s too late. With Trask dead, this is going to be tough, especially since Trask warns Daniel about Aiden before he died and now Daniel is poking into Aiden’s past.
Some big questions loom ahead: Can Aiden and Emily stop the Initiative from doing any further damage? Will Emily jeopardize her relationship with Aiden now that Daniel has publicly declared their reunion? Will Victoria eventually be reunited with her long lost son? What horrible plan did Trask set into motion?
Jack Starts a Payback
Let’s start by saying how great it is that Jack (Nick Wechsler) is putting his own revengenda into high gear! He dupes Conrad (Henry Czerny) into promising to seek justice for any wrongdoing at David Clarke’s trial at his press conference – and now Conrad is concerned that someone knows about his involvement in Amanda’s death.
This is just the first step in what is sure to be a determined mission by Jack to bring the Graysons down. He even recruits Conrad’s wily assistant, Ashley (Ashley Madekwe) and we’re a little unsure about this choice for an alliance. Ashley has back-stabbed just about everyone in the Hamptons. At least she’s close to the enemy, though, and this could serve Jack well. Just, please, please don’t get romantically involved with this vixen, Jack!
It would sure be an ironic twist of fate if Jack brings the Graysons down and does Emily’s job himself …
Aiden’s Deadly Discovery
Aiden draws Trask out by moving his money, which pushes Trask to liquidate his assets and thus cut his financial ties to Grayson Global. Daniel considers this a win. However, we’re not so sure – after Aiden learns Trask is moving into phase two, and Trask makes Daniel suspicious of Aiden.
Aiden forces Trask at gunpoint to take him to Padma. Sadly, she is dead and Trask gloats in their progress, hinting things have only just begun. We’re a little shocked that Aiden breaks his neck. Now he can’t draw any more information out of him. But, he does it as payback for Padma and his sister–even though Trask’s death can never undo these terrible tragedies.
Nolan is devastated when Aiden returns to the ball with the news of Padma’s death. Aiden is visibly stung by Nolan’s loss. He’s also edgy about Emily’s very public reunion with Daniel.
Later, when they are alone, Emily tries to reason with Aiden that they can’t take everything out on Daniel. Plus, she warns him to watch his back, now that Daniel is digging into his past. Aiden gets frustrated and Emily reminds him he can’t erase his father, and if Daniel turns to the Falcon, they could all be in trouble.
Aiden’s father unknowingly loaded the bomb on the flight the Initiative took down. Do they have some kind of similar plan in place for Daniel, Aiden, or Nolan by using Carrion as some sort of weapon of destruction? Can Aiden and Emily uncover their plan, or find the Falcon and get past the encryption to stop them from killing innocent people or making another innocent person a fall guy?
Plus, will Aiden be able to contain his jealousy, now that Daniel has rekindled his relationship with Emily? Is Emily’s relationship with Aiden already doomed, if she takes up romantically with Daniel again? At one point, Emily’s feelings for Daniel were very real. Will any feelings return if they’re together?
Nolan Laments Loss of His Love
We’ve been feeling sorry for Nolan for quite some time and now, we ache with him for his loss. Aiden and Emily both feel responsible for Padma’s death. Nolan blames himself more than anyone. Emily tries to console him to no avail. His heart is broken. He clearly feels like he didn’t do enough to save the woman he loved.
Gabriel Mann and Emily VanCamp do incredible work in this scene. We’re so glad Nolan and Emily have each other. But, it seems like Nolan’s attachment to Emily has cost him – and so many others, like Jack, some incredible losses. We hate seeing Nolan so tortured and would love to just hug him through his pain.
On top of everything, now the detective is questioning Nolan about his whereabouts near the time of Padma’s death. Uh oh. Did the Initiative already frame Nolan for Padma’s murder? Is Nolan going to be the next David Clarke and face prison for a crime he didn’t commit?
If this is the case, Emily and Aiden had better wave their magic revenge wands and make this problem disappear. Nolan doesn’t deserve this kind of terrible trouble after everything he tries to do to help Emily, Jack and even Aiden.
Of course, we don’t know if Nolan will become a serious suspect or not. We’ll have to wait and see how the mystery surrounding Padma’s death plays out.
Victoria’s Secret Son Revealed
Despite Victoria’s wicked ways, we hate that she became pregnant as a teenager via her mother’s boyfriend. We see young Victoria in flashbacks, seeking help from a nun and all of this footage is very moving. She tells Conrad she terminated the pregnancy, when in truth, she gave him to the nun who put him in foster care.
Victoria is sweating bullets (we know she has them, after all) when she gets the party RSVP from her loving son. Emily is behind this, of course, but an unsuspecting Victoria spends most of her time at the party looking for a ghost.
It’s great fun to see Victoria’s dismay over the fact that an uninvited Emily shows up at the ball on Daniel’s arm. Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe are masters at giving each other dagger-like stares over plastic smiles and the thought of a true cat fight breaking out between these two some day is just delicious!
It’s also a great scene when Daniel confronts his mother about her veiled threat in the previous episode. She’s appalled Daniel discovered her dark deed and he loves to rub it in. Daniel ices the cake by leaking his reunion with Emily to the press, using the candid photo that accompanied Victoria’s two gold bullets.
Aiden, we presume, sports the severed black rose in his lapel, wearing a different mask. Victoria goes after him. He disappears into the crowd, and when she thinks she’s found him, it’s not the same man. She faints from all of the pressure.
At the end of the episode, Victoria visits the nun in present day, who assures her she never divulged her identity to her son when he came inquiring after he’d grown. Victoria seems satisfies with what she hears.
Victoria leaves and Emily takes the seat she vacated next to the nun. She tells her she needs help, she’s pregnant, and has nowhere else to turn.
We know Emily’s not pregnant. What is she hoping to gain from the nun? The name of the place Victoria’s baby was sent to, perhaps? Will Emily find Victoria’s estranged son?
Once again, so many fates are hanging in the balance. A lot of casualties, also, are stacking up as the scheme continues to twist and turn. Unfortunately, it seems like innocent people are paying a terrible price and the guilty parties haven’t suffered many consequences.
Hopefully, Emily can turn things around before they get too much more out of control. Meanwhile, who would you like to see Emily end up with? Aiden? Daniel? Jack? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!
“Revenge” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
