Some of Cincinnati’s best table reservations are in the Cooks’ Wares classrooms at Harper’s Point (Montgomery) and Settlers’ Walk (Springboro). Registration opens for the spring/summer courses on Tuesday, April 2 at 9 a.m. Winter courses continue through April; the spring/summer schedule begins on May 5. Both stores are easy to access, just minutes from major expressways (Harper’s Point, I-71; Settlers’ Walk, I-75).
Most classes are presented demonstration-style, i.e., the instructor prepares the food, and samples of the dishes are shared with the class. A mirror overhead the demo area allows students to see all the action.
Recipes for the presented dishes are provided so you can try to apply at home what you learned in class. The courses are a great way to broaden your culinary interests in a relaxing, yet information-rich format. Classes are typically about $50 each and 3 hours long – don’t worry, there’s breaks to eat, drink and shop…students can take advantage of a 10% in-store discount on the day of class session.
Cooks’ Wares students have the opportunity to interact with and learn directly from the region’s favorite chefs. But while the talent is local, courses are as diverse as humankind’s palates and skill levels. Learn more about Asian Fusion Tapas (May 30), Island [Puerto Rico] Pastries (June 12) or Mediterranean Easy Cooking, Big Flavors (July 23) – to name just a few.
Local cookbook author and favorite Fox talk radio (WKRC 550AM) foodie Marilyn Harris is a regular and popular presenter. Join her for Main Dish Salads on May 15, a Casual Summer Celebration Southwestern Style (June 19) or Fresh and Zesty with Citrus (July 31).
Nationally-recognized talent is no stranger to the Cooks’ Wares classroom, such as cookbook author Diane Phillips, who will share A Summer Celebration: Salad Days (August 7-8) and Quick Fresh Mediterranean (August 9).
A fun feature for summer 2013 is Mobile Mondays – Food Truck Mania! Food truck convenience has gone from hot dogs to haute cuisine, and enterprising Cincinnatians have literally jumped on the wagon. Cooks’ Wares brings them to you in the comfort of their air conditioned classrooms, including:
- C’est Cheese (May 13)
- Pizza Bomba (June 10)
- Bones’ Burgers (June 3)
- Eat! Mobile Dining (June 17)
- SugarSnap Sweet Treats (June 24)
All Mobile Mondays are at Harper’s Point, and are as affordable as the roadside fare served: these are some of Cooks’ Wares most affordable classes at $40 per class.
This summer vacation, nurture your children’s interest in cooking and give them skills for a lifetime in the three-day Tweens in the Kitchen Camp (June 10-13, Harper’s Point; July 29-August 1, Settlers’ Walk) or Parent and Child Cooking (June 26, Settlers’ Walk; June 27, Harper’s Point). The latter is geared toward ages 6-12 and hits hot buttons such as pizza, mac and cheese, Chinese stir-fry and more, but as homemade versions!
Hands-on classes are sometimes available and are noted as such in the course descriptions. Master Series Basics II builds on the Basics I series and is offered as four Monday evening class sessions this summer. Skills covered include knife skills, food sources, seasonings, specific preparation techniques and more, applied across an array of dishes. The four session topics are:
- Chicken (July 8)
- Beef (July 15)
- Fish (July 22)
- Pork (July 29)
Because of the intimate, personal classroom setting, seating is limited and popular classes fill up quickly. Take advantage of the varied course menu at Cooks’ Wares and explore new possibilities for your kitchen this summer.
