The Oasis Youth Center in Tacoma is once again sponsoring Queer Prom. “Oasis is a youth-adult partnership in which young people and adults come together for shared teaching, learning and action” and a program of the Pierce County AIDS Foundation, according to their website.
On May 18th, the event will be held at the University Center at Pacific Lutheran University at 7:30 p.m.
Queer Prom is open to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied youth ages 14-24. A donation of $2 is suggested.
Many youth who have a sexual orientation or gender identity that is not the norm do not feel welcome at their high school prom dances. Even if they are allowed to attend, often times they do not feel truly welcomed and included in the activities.
Other programs and services provided by Oasis Youth Center include a drop-in center, rapid HIV testing, and support for those struggling with issues around sexual orientation or gender identity.
