On Saturday April 27th, 2013 the President attended the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C. The room was full of celebrities and the event’s chosen host was comedian and late night TV star Conaan O’Brian. While this dinner brings special attention to the role the press and media play into the presidency and the White House it is a 100 year old tradition that also serves as a fundraiser. Providing support to educate journalists and dedicate awards to those who have earned the rights.
In 1914, under President Woodrow Wilson, the WHCA was formed to connect regular meetings of holding press conferences to discuss much needed information with the public. It was the duty of 11 reporters to make this foundation to assist the presidency in communications from the White House. Today whitehouse.gov is a popular site which offers information on special issues, the schedule of the President, and provides a forum to send email into the White House. There is even information on this site about how to become a student ( intern (volunteer) in the White House. This is an unpaid position lasting one semester long, requiring 9 am to 5 pm hours, and professional attire. The first dinner was not held offically until 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge was in office.
Each year this dinner has served as a spotlight of entertainment and professional achievments. President Obama was hillarious making jokes about how he has been critized and even popular stories raising questions about unfairness in his time in offcie, like the Jay Z and Beounce ordeal over a trip to Cuba. He laughed off some tipically scandelous comments and stories that have taken over the main-stream media. All in all he comments that ” The Media landscaping is always changing.”.. ending with a joke about his college days being different those of today. Yet the point he made was how the media and internet are converged and create an interdimentional experience in our generation. The viral ideas of today will be changed overnight and another one is its place by tomorrow.
Bravely President Obama talked about Repubilcans, and even recent achievements of former President George Bush opening his new library in Texas. With a great sense of humor he poked fun at every type of possible spread rumor available to him. From comments made by Marco Rubio after his Address of the Nation this year, which were funny all on their own, to directing attention at “Rap Refference(s)”. The president opens up a wide range of topics understood by the public’s eye. A specail apperance from Steven Speilburg showed the light onto one of this year’s most popular films, ” Lincoln”. The President took part in a comedy skit where he played an actor playing himself. The new film from Speilburg was labeled “Obama”. Making another youtube hit for him as well, this video has gone viral with over 2 million views.
In his closing remarks the President encourages the press and media to do better. He said, “Those of us in Public office..the press…( and others..media)..we can do better!”. He appreciated the work of the local papers in Boston for reporting on the tragedies that have taken place through the last few weeks concerning the bombing at the marathon there. To ” told stories that needed to be told”, the president greatly applauded the efforts of those journalist who were continuing coverage from differing points of view. Whenever critics bring into the press the bias sided attempts to insult the man, President Obama has shown he is always aware of what is going on in the media and is continuning to be involved. Currently the White House channel on youtube has over 3,700 videos telling the story of America’s president.
