When Pearl Izumi set out to design a clothing line for ultra runners, they faced a number of challenges. To withstand runs of 100 plus miles, the products had to be feather light, transfer sweat easily, dry quickly and of course never chafe.
Pearl Izumi definitely hit the mark with their new Ultra Collection for men and women, a line that includes shorts, tops, vests, jackets and even skirts.
The Ultra Inside-Out Singlet
The Ultra Inside-Out Singlet is made with inside-out seam construction to insure chafe free running. Not only is the top extremely lightweight, but the Transfer Dry Fabric easily wicks sweat away from your body, dries fast and resists the stink that can accumulate on long runs. But the best part of the singlet is the abrasion resistant print on the shoulders that not only protects the thin underlying fabric from wearing thin, but also holds your pack in place on the go. ($50)
The Ultra Split Short
The Ultra Split Short has a slightly longer inseam than traditional split shorts, measuring in at four inches in a size medium. The short and liner are constructed with Transfer Dry fabric, offering all of the same benefits as the singlet. There’s a zippered pocket in the back, large enough to carry a couple of gels, your ID or your key. The best part of the shorts is a Gel Flask pocketing system that’s angled for easy access. The pockets are also integrated into the lining of the short to prevent bouncing. $70.
The Ultra Vest
If you live in an area where the climate changes quickly or you just want a little extra protection from the wind, the Ultra Vest is the perfect solution for moderate days. The front panel is made of wind and water resistant Barrier Lite fabric. The back is solid mesh, offering excellent breathability, especially under a pack. There’s a zippered rear pocket for storage, that also doubles as a stuff sack. Like the Ultra Inside-Out Singlet, there’s an abrasion resistant print on the shoulders to provide extra traction for you pack. ($99)
The Ultra Skirt
The Ultra Skirt has all of the benefits of the Split Short—Transfer Dry fabric, zippered back pocket, and the Gel Flask Pocketing system—in a cute and feminine package. While some running skirts are either so long that they restrict movement (and look a little dorky), or so short you feel like your rear is hanging out, the Ultra Skirt offers the best of both worlds. The front is shorter than the back (12.6 inches vs. 15 inches), allowing for easy movement while still providing plenty of posterior coverage. ($70)
