Professional opera singer Luigi Boccia is Light Opera of New Jersey’s special guest artist of the year. His performance in their OPERAgious!! will be this coming May 3rd at 8 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church in Basking Ridge. It is sure to please anyone who has a love for good singing. Mr. Boccia’s special gift caused the highly read OPERA NEWS magazine to call him “a name to watch: he has vocal star quality to burn. He is an uncommonly cerebral tenor who speaks with high-speed, high-energy eloquence”.
Having performed all over the world at a very young age Mr. Boccia has his roots right here in Wayne, New Jersey. However he was raised in Italy where opera is the passion for a huge portion of the country. He received a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Pavia in 2004. Although he never originally considered a career as a performing artist until he became impassioned by singing when opera legend Gianni Raimondi was so impressed with him that he offered to give him private singing lessons for free!
Recently Mr. Boccia has performed Nemorino in The Elixir of Love for the Academy for Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and Almaviva in The Barber of Seville with the New Jersey State Opera. He has won many NYC musical foundation awards as well as first prize from Opera at Florham’s 2011 Violetta DuPont Vocal Competition.
OPERAgious!! will also feature some of the best young talent in the state and surrounding area. Soprano Chelsea Friedlander (photo) will perform the well-known duet “Una Parola” for the Elixir of Love with Mr. Boccia. Ms. Friedlander will also be joined by local artists Greg Voinier, Jamie Baer Peterson, Denise Mihalik, Alex Corson and John Lamb. Accompaniment will be provided by professional pianist Mary Pinto, also of Wayne, New Jersey.
