In this updated Total Recall remake, Colin Farrell plays the role of Douglas Quaid, a spy on the run after a failed brain vacation at the infamous Rekall offices goes bad. Now not knowing who is after him or why, Quaid fights back in hopes of revealing all.
Colin Farrell (Quaid/Hauser), Kate Beckinsale (Lori), Jessica Biel (Melina), Bryan Cranston (Cohaagen), Bokeem Woodbine (Harry), Bill Nighy (Matthias), John Cho (McClane), Will Yun Lee (Marek).
This version of Total Recall starts off much like the original by giving us a picture of Quaid’s life as he knows it. With nods to the original, the film then moves into the action and suspense unraveling a confusing tale of espionage, treason, and just plain anger. As the plot develops the story focuses more on the action than the drama and a lot of the suspense build-up is lost in a hail of bullets and technology, finally finishing with somewhat meager ending.
Acting was good with Farrell doing a decent job in his role as confused action hero. Beckinsale let her sharp edges show in this one as one of the antagonists, along with Cranston. Biel was okay but felt a bit soft for her part, as well as being underused. The remainder of the supporting cast did nicely, adding body to the film.
Camera work, sets and backgrounds were good but CGI took over in this one. The special effects work was immense and involved in just about every scene. It was also well done with good attention to detail and a solid feel. Physical effects were present and also good, but out shined by the CGI. Dialogue was okay but not exciting. Sound and soundtrack were decent.
Overall Total Recall is a fun Action Sci-Fi flick and a decent updating of the original film without trying to be a copy. Fans of the original might be frustrated by differences in the plot, but most will find this a solid action flick if nothing else.
With plenty of sci-fi violence and action, mild nudity, sexual content, and foul language this one should be fine for teens and above.
Total Recall is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
