In 1930’s New York City, Lamont is a dapper man by day, and the crime-fighting hero The Shadow at night. With help from Moe, he battles the last descendent of Genghis Khan, Shiwan, to prevent him from conquering the world while at the same time trying not to fall in love with Margo. As Shiwan tries to use mind control to conquer the world, Lamont realizes Margo has psychic powers and may not only realize he is The Shadow, but may also find out about his past as a ruthless killer.
Alec Baldwin (Lamont/Shadow), John Lone (Shiwan), Penelope Ann Miller (Margo), Tim Curry (Farley), Peter Boyle (Moe).
Based on the comic strip of the same name, this movie is like most comics made into movies, more than a bit hard to swallow in spots. Kicking off with development of the Lamont character and how he became The Shadow was a good way to make the movie viewable for those who never saw the comic. After that, plot development takes over for a bit with some action scenes thrown in to keep everyone interested. Once that is done the action starts and things get more interesting, although the film never develops a high energy. It seems to be confused between being campy and taking itself to seriously.
Part of the lack of energy seems to be Baldwin who seems to never get very excited about anything and whose ability to display any emotion beside humor is equivalent to that of a hamster. Lone, Miller, and Boyle all did very nicely in their parts. I’m not a big Curry fan, the dude freaks me out, but he did play his part well and freaked me out at the same time.
Camera work and sets were all nicely done and of good quality. Just don’t try hard to ensure compliance with the era or you will find flaws. Sound and dialogue were also well done and appropriate for the genre.
I’m not usually a big fan of comic books made into films but this one seemed to be done a bit better than most, despite the lack of energy.
Some fantasy action violence but no nudity or sex so this one is okay for preens and above.
The Shadow is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
