This version of the Amazing Spider-Man story is a bit more serious, focusing on some of the hardships Peter faced as he discovers his new powers. While still in high school, Peter learns to focus his power while facing down archvillain The Lizard.
Andrew Garfield (Peter/Spidey), Emma Stone (Gwen), Rhys Ifans (Dr. Connors/The Lizard), Denis Leary (Capt. Stacy), Martin Sheen (Uncle Ben), Sally Field (Aunt May), Irrfan Khan (Rajit), Campbell Scott (Richard).
The Amazing Spider-Man starts off focusing on the death of Peter’s parents before shifting focus to Peter himself. From there the film takes brief moments to examine the darker points to Peter’s becoming Spider-Man. Stops on the journey include; high school bullies, unrequited love, guilt, revenge, and a few others. What the film doesn’t have is any humor and almost as little happiness. Though not completely depressing, this version does take a much darker look at the story than most.
Acting was pretty good. Garfield does surprisingly well with the Spider-Man suit on. Stone gave a solid performance and seemed to do well with Garfield. Ifans was a good choice for his role and pulled it off nicely. Leary, Sheen, Field and the remainder of the supporting cast did well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done as would be expected from a bigger budgeted film. CGI however was a mainstay in this one with extensive background work along with main scenes and characters. Most of the CGI was well done, without only a few over the top or overly obvious scenes. Dialogue was decent and, like the rest of the film, somewhat dark at times. Sound and soundtrack were good.
Overall The Amazing Spider-Man is a nicely done Action Adventure flick that is a bit more focused on the dark side of things than most. Still, the film and story remain enjoyable and some good action keeps things interesting.
With plenty action violence, this should be fine for preens and above.
The Amazing Spider-Man is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
