Screamers: The Hunting continues the Philip K. Dick based story presented in the original with a rescue team from Earth responding to an SOS from an abandoned screamer infested planet. Finding a few human survivors struggling to survive, the rescue team realizes they may in fact be a new generation of Screamers with a much more deadly goal than ever intended.
Gina Holden (Lt. Victoria Bronte), Jana Pallaske (Schwartz), Lance Henriksen (Orsow), Greg Bryk (Cmdr. Andy Sexton), Christopher Redman (Rafe), Tim Rozon (Madden), Dave Lapommeray (Sgt. Romulo), Jody Richardson (Soderquist).
Screamers: The Hunting starts off giving the impression it is running in an entirely different direction from the original as the rescue team approaches an abandoned planet from which an SOS is coming. Once on the planet, things take a more familiar tone as the Screamers realize there are humans to kill. Once the team runs across Osrow the plot takes a few twists as we all realize things are not as they seem. Finally the film winds down with a somewhat predictable ending.
Acting was a bit lacking in this one sadly. Holden was decent but felt like she could have put forth more energy. Pallaske, Bryk, Redman and the remainder of the supporting cast felt lethargic and lacking sincerity. Henriksen was pretty good for his part, which tied this film to the original nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were decent and fit the film pretty well. Physical effects were good as well. CGI was nicely done without taking over the film, as were gore and horror effects. Dialogue was dry and didn’t do much for the plot. Sound and soundtrack were okay.
Overall Screamers: The Hunting was a lukewarm sequel to the first film and a bit disappointing considering the plot possibilities and originality. Fans of the original will likely enjoy this one, though not quite as much as the original.
With plenty of gore and violence, save this one for older teens and above.
Screamers: The Hunting is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
