Hawk, a recently released from prison cat-burglar who sings show tunes rather than time his burglaries with a watch, is blackmailed by rich nutballs Darwin and Minerva to steal Da Vinci works of art to help further their world domination plot. Once they have all the pieces they can put together a machine that will turn lead into gold.
Bruce Willis (Hawk), Danny Aiello (Tommy), Andie MacDowell (Anna), James Coburn (George), Richard Grant (Darwin), Sandra Bernhard (Minerva).
How can you expect much from this one? Bruce Willis singing show tunes? Anyone who is expecting a lot from this movie isn’t paying attention. The problem with this one was the induced ADD it causes in the audience as the plot jumps around more than a drop of water in a hot oily skillet. Every time it started to settle down and have some consistency, things go crazy and it switches from campy to action, or from action to adventure. At the same time, that is what kept the film mildly entertaining since it didn’t look like it would have worked had it stayed in a single genre.
It is funny, Willis can deliver the comedy as well as the action. Even Aiello was funny. MacDowell could have done better but she filled the hole as a semi-sexy secret agent nun. Grant and Bernhard were both over the top, not to mention it hurts just to look at Bernhard most of the time.
Sets were well done for the most part, special effects were minimal but appropriate, and sound was well done throughout. Camera work was also well done while dialog was a mix of ridiculous and migraine inducing.
If you want an off the wall comedy and something totally unusual, check this out. Otherwise, try to forget you ever heard of it before.
Preens and above should be fine watching this one, just make sure you monitor younger viewers for seizures during viewing. Some foul language was about the worst thing in this one.
Hudson Hawk is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
