Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance starts off well enough with some brief backstory to bring those up to speed who missed the first film. From there the story devolves into more drama than we really care to see. The action scenes are still pretty good, and the CGI is fun, but there just aren’t enough of those moments and the sarcastic humor which works well for Cage, and did in the first film, is pretty much missing. Much like the depth of this film. Punctuation with comic strips was a bit annoying as well.
Cage did okay but just didn’t feel like he was into the role this time. Placido did well in her role but didn’t feel like she had good chemistry with anyone else in the film. Riordan did okay, as did the remainder of the supporting cast. Nothing exciting, but solid work all around.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good enough and the film obviously had a good budget. Physical and CGI effects were well blended but lacked energy and felt almost like routine at times. CGI was a bit overdone at times, when Johnny changes and with the Ghost Rider’s chain. Ghost Rider’s head twitching was a bit weird as well. Dialogue was bland, as was the soundtrack, while sound was good.
Overall Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a bit disappointing when compared to the first film. That said, it is a decent entry-level action adventure flick that younger viewers will probably enjoy.
With intense action and violence, disturbing images, and some foul language this should be fine for teens and above.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
