In the future police are actually judges able to try, convict, and even sentence criminals on the spot. With Earth now a barren wasteland and the remaining population crowded into huge cities, Judge Dredd is on the prowl for drug-dealing terrorists.
Karl Urban (Dredd), Jason Cope (Zwirner), Olivia Thirlby (Cassandra), Rakie Ayola (Chief Judge), Lena Headey (Ma-Ma), Tamer Burjaq (Bodyguard), Warrick Grier (Caleb), Wood Harris (Kay), Rachel Wood (Control Operator 1).
Dredd begins pretty well with a torture probably never considered by many. From there the film plods along looking like a long lost entry in the Robocop franchise, or something similar. The story is common enough so nothing very exciting there. The rest of the film plays along and remains fairly flat. Yes, there are some interesting action scenes but even those feel somewhat generic and flavorless. The film has no humor, no serious intrigue or mystery, and very little drama. There just isn’t much beyond some good shootouts.
Acting was pretty much as flat as the rest of the film. Urban was uninteresting but, that was pretty much the role. Heady was a bit more interesting and at least added a little excitement to the film. Cope, Thirlby and the remainder of the cast were okay but didn’t seem to have much chemistry.
Camera work was okay but CGI really added to it with a lot of slow-motion scenes used to present a specific aspect of the film. Sets and backgrounds were okay but bland. Dialogue was almost boring through most of the film. Sound and soundtrack were okay.
Overall Dredd was an action adventure flick with some action but not a lot of adventure. The film just never generates the energy found in the first film. Serious fans of the series may enjoy this one a bit while others may find it just isn’t very entertaining.
With plenty of strong violence, foul language, drug use, and some sexual content save this one for older teens and above.
Dredd is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
