Barnabas is a vampire who has been kept away from his family home for centuries. Returning with hopes of finding a successful large vampire family he instead finds the shattered remains of his once prominent family, and none are vampires.
Johnny Depp (Barnabas), Michelle Pfeiffer (Elizabeth), Helena Bonham Carter (Dr. Hoffman), Eva Green (Angelique), Jackie Haley (Willie), Jonny Miller (Roger), Bella Heathcote (Victoria/Josette), Chloe Moretz (Carolyn), Gulliver McGrath (David).
Dark Shadows began with some good history that at the time, we didn’t even know was history. Skipping ahead to modern day, Barnabas returns home to find the remnants of his once proud family has been reduced to humans scraping by meagerly. Working to catch up with changes in the world, Barnabas is determined to make his family wealthy and powerful once again. But he soon finds out that a few hundred years doesn’t always erase the past.
Acting was good with Depp doing a surprisingly good job as a vampire. Pfeiffer played against him well and brought good depth into her role. Carter was quirky and unusual as always, as was Haley and even Miller. Heathcote and the remainder of the supporting cast were enjoyable and did nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were typical Tim Burton with interesting details, color, and composition. Physical effects were minimal but good while CGI played pretty heavily in the film. Coloring and other CGI effects were nicely done and again, consistent with a Burton film; almost comical but very well done. Dialogue was enjoyable with some Victorian style speech included. Sound and soundtrack were both well done.
Overall Dark Shadows was an enjoyable take on the cult soap with the same name. The story is just dark enough, the humor is just light enough, and the film moves along at a nice pace. Fans of both vampires and dark comedy should enjoy this one.
With some comic horror violence, smoking, mild foul language, drug use, and sexual content this one should actually be fine for teens and above.
Dark Shadows is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
