It is refreshing to see the church address the “sex ed” issue within the church! Created by God written by Rev. James Ritchie, a United Methodist Minister, created the curriculum that focuses on ‘tweens – kids from 10 to 13 years old. Here’s a video on Dr. Ritchie:
The program offers a retreat style weekend that offers six sessions. The focus includes
*Jesus’ life as a teen
* Puberty and Adolescence
* Adam & Eve
* Anatomy and Reproductive Systems
* Growth & Development
* Dating, Falling in Love and Marriage
* Love & Sexual Intercourse
* Conception, Fetal Development, and Childbirth
It also covers hot topics on abstinence, abuse, rape, birth control, heterosexuality, homosexuality, masturbation, oral sex, internet, chat rooms, phone sex, sexting, pornography, pregnancy – planned and unplanned, STIs and AIDS.
There is also a parent/child session to go over the curriculum and discuss expectations and how to provide help.
Created by God is
*affirms growth and change as a part of God’s plan
*recognizes and celebrates sexuality as a good gift from God
*give guidelines for lifelong loving relationships
*challenges all to make careful decisions
*celebrates God’s love and forgiveness
The main differences from a traditional school curricula is:
*males and females learn together and also have a gender specific breakout session
*focuses on relationships, attitudes, feelings and value
*emphasis is on God’s creation and our relationship with God
*builds self-esteem through confidence in God’s love
*encourages healthy relationships and wise choices
*defines appropriate boundaries and gives guidelines
*provides continuing relationship with a mentoring adult who pledges confidentiality
In Created by God, parents are considered the primary sexuality educator from birth. Parents are also considered the most influential over their children and work in partnership with their church family to educate and protect their children. By parents having the opportunity to work with their students (fathers and daughters/mothers and sons) they can impart their values and strengthen their relationships. Parents are encouraged to not give away their power by their silence.
With many children hitting puberty earlier these days, the onslaught of inappropriate media, less supervised time and outside restraints, and the challenge of pre-marital life before marriage, the messages our children are getting about sex is confusing, inappropriate and difficult.
Bear Creek United Methodist Church will be hosting a Created by God weekend event on Friday, May 17th and Saturday, May 18th. The class will be led by Christine Kalmbach and Phil Tyler. A mandatory parent meeting will be held on Thursday, May 9th at BCUMC. More information is available at: http://bearcreekumc.org/
