Since Kyle Weller won his class championship in 2012 he needs to prepare for the 85/150 (12-15) B class this season. Fortunately Weller and some of his friends had the perfect opportunity the day before Easter to prepare when the temperatures rose into the mid 50’s after a cold beginning to spring. This couldn’t of come at a better time since round 1 of the MDRA 6 series starts the very next weekend at Dublin Gap.
Equipment with a new CRF150R Kyle seemed comfortable and relaxed every time he put his practice laps together even though he was slightly off his pace from the end of last season. Of course that is to be expected when you live in central PA and don’t get to ride much during the winter. Once the season gets into full swing Kyle will be able to focus on lowering his lap times but for now it seems he is using his moto intellect by not pushing too early. This is a wise tactic used to lower the risk of injury which not many young racers his age adopt until after they’ve had a few of there own.
One rider who is well aware of the risk of injuries is Kyle’s younger brother Kaleb. Kaleb was ripping around on a Suzuki RM 65 and is scheduled to race round 1 of the MDRA 6 championship series in the 65cc (7-11) class. He suffered multiple injuries last year and couldn’t compete most of the series and is hungry for some redemption.
There was another rider ripping around on a CRF150R. This rider’s name is Kolby Sheaffer. Kolby is a friend of Kyle’s and is a competitor of his also. However due to some injuries of his own last year Kolby was unable to earn the points needed to move up. This means you’ll only get to see Kyle and Kolby competing together in the Super Mini class as Kolby will add this class to his race schedule as he primarily focusses on a solid run at the 85/150 (12-15) C class.
The only big bike on this properly prepared track this day was a 2013 CRF450R piloted by Dave Viola. Dave was enjoying the ease of a non-competetive day while he got comfortable on his new Honda. Dave will be contesting the Plus 25 B/C class this year like he did last season.
If you are interested in following this series from the beginning you’ll have to do it live as this is a local series and will not be coverage by Speed TV. Round 1 starts Sunday April 7, 2013 with a practice day schedule the day before at Dublin Gap Motocross Park in Shippensburg, PA.
