‘Ghost in the shell’ is the 1995 anime directed by Mamoru Oshii. Screenwriter was Kazunori Ito. Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow.
The infamous criminal known as the Puppet Master doesn’t hack computers. He does people. Anyone whether they’re an augmented human, cyborg or android is in danger. The Puppet Master jacks into your mind to make you do whatever he wants.
To cover his tracks he erases memories to implant false ones. Simultaneously uploading the necessary skills to perform certain tasks.
The government agency Section 9 has made him their number one priority. Major Motoko Kusanagi is leader of taskforce. She’s also a cyborg. Her team is made up of cyborgs and augmented humans.
Some branches of the government don’t want the Puppet Master killed. They repeatedly block Section 9’s efforts while trying to capture him for themselves. The Puppet Master is thought to be American.
But the truth is he’s not even a person. The Puppet Master or Project 2501 is a self-aware A.I. It escaped into cyberspace to elude capture. Sometimes taking possession of others and creating chaos to throw them off its trail.
What does Project 2501 want? To be reborn by merging with Major Kusanagi. He thinks their children, born inside cyberspace, will be the next evolution in A.I.
The good: Haven’t been this stunned since Akira. Truly ground breaking. The uber cool rendering of the city. Especially of the skyscrapers. When thoughts stray to GITS, do you hear the choir singing? Shirow’s version of the future, technology and cool weapons.
Androids with a “ghost” or soul. Briefcase machine guns. Therm optic camouflage. Construction of Kusanagi’s replacement body. Holoemitter s allowing the team to have a holosuite conference meeting. In the Dept. Head Daisuke Aramaki’s office. Section 9’s IT dept. as surgeons performing cyber brain surgery.
Did the Major’s glowing eyes remind anyone of Replicants? The androids’ hands when they type. Weapons that would make Arnold Schwarzenegger drool. Love that Batou always has the Major’s back. Virtual lava lamp.
The bad: Kusanagi doesn’t like it when people resist arrest. The Major’s therm optic camouflage doesn’t work unless she’s naked? How Section 6 played Section 9. Someone’s clock is ticking. Project 2501 is bold. Forget the whole process of dating Major Kusanagi. Let’s get married on the first date then have babies. Now! He couldn’t find a nice program to settle down with?
The ugly: The movie wasn’t longer. The ending could’ve been better.
