Think California ski resorts are all closed for the season? Don’t be so quick to put the ski gear away for next season. One ski resort is still running its lifts.
Skiing and snowboarding is still taking place at Mammoth Mountain. The large California ski resort, which is located in Eastern California, along the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, will remain open this season at least through Memorial Day weekend, tentatively closing on May 27.
To date, Mammoth has received 305 inches of snow and currently has a base depth of 5-14 feet from Main Lodge to the Summit.
“It’s been a great year for Mammoth and we recently announced that we will remain open through Memorial Day and longer if possible,” said Mammoth spokesperson Deena Betcher. “Currently the conditions are great, with a mix of both spring and powder on the mountain.”
Mammoth closed both Eagle and Canyon Lodges recently, but the Main Lodge will stay open through the season, providing access to top-to-bottom terrain.
In Lake Tahoe, Alpine Meadows was the last resort to shut down, concluding its season on Sunday, April 28.
“The 2012-13 winter season was a really successful season as a whole at both Squaw and Alpine,” said Amelia Richmond, a spokesperson for both Squaw and Alpine. “While we didn’t have as many powder days as usual, our improved snowmaking systems and January’s cold temperatures kept a really solid snow surface throughout the season and kept us skiing into spring.”
At Mammoth, the Memorial Day holiday will kick off on May 24 with snowboard contests, skate demos, art shows, live music, golf tournaments, and the bike park grand opening May 25.
To make the weekend even sweeter, Mammoth is offering a ski-bike-golf package for only $99 and lodging deals starting at $99. This package will enable guests to experience the best of Mammoth for just one ticket, which is good for unlimited skiing/riding, unlimited bike park access, and nine holes of golf.
A reception for all challengers will also be held to celebrate the accomplishments of completing all three activities in one day.
