Thanks to Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 and the screenshots we’ve seen so far, we now know that the replacement for the “lucky charms” cycle and Magic 2013’s “rings of power” cycle in the upcoming core set are going to be new lifegain artifacts such as Staff of the Wild Magus. We don’t know for sure the names of the white, blue, black, and red-enhancing members of the cycle yet, but one of the screenshots in the MTGSalvation thread that spoiled Regathan Firecat may contain a clue. In the background of the photo of several red cards in various zones, there’s a mysterious new artifact whose text isn’t clearly visible, but the artwork is unmistakable: It’s definitely a gauntleted hand raising up a staff glowing with red energy against a smoky, ashen background. The number of lines and the orientation of the text seems consistent with Staff of the Wild Magus, it’s clearly an uncommon, and the final lines look like they have a “1 life” at the end of them, so it’s fair to assume this is a member of the same cycle.
The name of the card is difficult, but not impossible to discern. It is, by all appearances, Staff of the Flame Magus. This means that all of the members of the uncommon lifegain artifact cycle will be in the format “Staff of the [FOO] Magus.” This is unlike the very first cycle of such artifacts that originated back in Alpha which had varied names that had nothing to do with each other. The Darksteel lucky charms and their follow-up Golem’s Heart all had “[Creature]’s [Body part]” names, but even they were not as similar as these are shaping up to be.
We have not seen the white, blue, or black-favoring Staffs yet, but they’ll probably be respectively named something like Staff of the Bright Magus, Staff of the Ocean Magus, and Staff of the Shadow Magus.
