One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, 21, is being publicly shamed to spend more time with his biological father and half-sister Georgia. His father Troy Austin has given a tabloid interview saying that Louis has been too busy for him and his 14-year-old daughter, Georgia, who is one of Louis’ half-sisters. Austin claims that Louis has met Georgia only three times in her life.
In the Sunday Mirror’s issue dated March 24, 2013, Austin (who is a construction worker) talked about desperately wanting to reconnect with Louis not just for his own sake but also for the sake of Georgia, whom he says idolizes Louis.
Louis’ parents divorced when he was 2 years old. His mother, Johana, married her second husband, Mark Tomlinson, not long after her divorce, and Louis’ last name became Tomlinson. Johana and Mark Tomlinson (who divorced in 2011) also raised four daughters during their marriage: 14-year-old Lottie, 12-year-old Felicite and 8-year-old twins Phoebe and Daisy. In March 2013, Johana got engaged to Dan Deakin. She announced the engagement on Twitter with this message: “‘Had a lovely time in Dublin and I got engaged to my lovely man @drdeakin XxX.”
In 2010, Tomlinson auditioned for “The X Factor” U.K. as a solo singer. He was rejected but then put into a group with four other young male contestants who were also rejected as solo singers during the “boot camp” stage of the competition. The group, which was named One Direction, ultimately came in third place on the show.
One Direction has since become the biggest-selling global act to emerge from “The X Factor,” by having No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries. Simon Cowell, who was One Direction’s “X Factor” mentor on the show, signed One Direction to Syco Music, the record company that he co-owns with Sony Music. Cowell is given the lion’s share of the credit for coming up with the idea of forming One Direction, although Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger (who were on the show’s judging panel with Cowell during that time) say that it was their idea too.
Louis Tomlinson’s biological father Austin admits that even though he and his son lived in the same city (Doncaster, England) for years, he rarely kept in touch with Louis. For about nine years of his childhood, Louis also lived in Bournemouth, England. At the time that Louis auditioned for “The X Factor,” he lived in Doncaster, but he has been living in London ever since One Direction has been on “The X Factor.”
Austin told the Sunday Mirror about his limited contact with Louis: “I’d keep up to date with what he was doing from his mum and grandad. But we all had new lives. A few days before [he was on ‘The X Factor’], his mum rang out of the blue and told me Louis wanted to see me. He was so grown up. The last time I’d seen him, he was a boy. Now he was a handsome young man. His manners were impeccable.
“I was bowled over by how he’d turned out. I told Johanna he was a credit to her. He explained that he’d auditioned for ‘The X Factor’ and that he’d been put in a group by Simon Cowell. He said he didn’t want me to find out just by seeing him on TV. I knew he’d been in a band when he was at school and that he was into performing. I think he gets it from my nan, his great-gran. She died in 2001 aged 86 but was still singing in her local pub right up until the end. She was a born entertainer …
“Seeing what he’s done with his life makes me so happy. I know people will think I’m only interested in being part of his life again because he’s rich and famous. But it’s not about that. I’m his dad. We’re flesh and blood and nothing can change that. I’m so proud of him I could burst.
“Of course, I would love to see him again and have a proper relationship with him. What dad wouldn’t? But it’s up to him. I want him to know I think he’s fantastic – and that Georgia is his biggest fan … All she wants is to be a proper sister to him.”
Austin told the Sunday Mirror that Georgia first met Louis when she was 7 and Louis was 14.
During Louis’ time on “The X Factor,” Austin claims that he tried to get in touch with his son several times but that Louis’ cell phone number was changed many times, and that his ex-wife Johana and “X Factor” handlers were “protective” of Louis.
On March 20, 2103, Louis’ father and half-sister Georgia went to see One Direction’s concert at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England. Austin told the Sunday Mirror that they paid for the tickets and tried to go backstage to talk to Louis, but they were sent away by One Direction handlers, who said that the band had to “rush off.”
Austin said, “I haven’t been there for most of his life, so I understand I’m not one of his main priorities. He knows we were in the crowd and now I want to tell him what it meant to me to see him up there. I cried buckets.”
He said that Georgia is heartbroken that she and Louis don’t have a close sibling relationship.
The Sunday Mirror noted at the end of the article: “Troy was not paid for this interview. A donation has been made on his behalf to the Bluebell Wood children’s cancer charity.”
Even if Austin hadn’t been paid for the interview, many people would consider it in very bad taste to try to resolve a private family matter by giving a tabloid interview about it.
On March 24, 2013, Louis Tomlinson tweeted this statement in an apparent response to his father’s interview with the Sunday Mirror: “I’d like to start off the day by saying a big f*ck you to ‘the mirror’ :) on a happier note huge love to all out fans, you keep us going!!”
