After two periods of play the New York Islanders are leading the Montreal Canadiens by the score of 3-2 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Islanders are coming off a shootout win Sunday against the Ottawa Senators at home where wins have been hard to come by. They are just 3-8-1 at home ice where they will be playing their next two games.
Even with such results at home, the Islanders are just a stone’s throw out of a playoff spot. If they are to get in, it may be at the expense of their rival the New York Rangers who they will host Thursday night. If the Flyers knock off the Rangers tonight and the Islanders win, the Isles and Rangers would be tied going into the game.
Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils are in free fall down the Eastern Conference standings having lost five straight. If the downward spiral continues there, the Islanders could stand to benefit.
But of course, the Islanders will need to win in order to climb the standings. A win against the best team in the east tonight would make quite a statement. Such a victory could breath confidence into the team as they look to Thursday’s matchup.
