On Saturday, May 11, the day before Mother’s Day, seventeen St. Louis area women will tell their mom-stories to entertain and inspire an audience gathered to celebrate all mothers. Listen to Your Mother is a live-reading event birthed in 2010 by Ann Imig, a Wisconsin writer, mom and “stay at home humorist.” This year, the community-produced show has spread to 24 cities across the nation, including, for the first time, St. Louis.
Writers Ellie Grossman (“Mishegas of Motherhood”), Laura Edwards Ray (“Brain Dead in the Burbs and Cooking Your Way Back to Sanity”) and Suzanne Tucker (“My Mommy Manual”) teamed with Naomi Francis of Master Events to produce and direct the show. They will read their stories of “the beauty, the beast and the barely rested.” The diverse selection of local mom speakers includes:
Alana Flowers – whose story was featured on Great Day St. Louis
Linda O’Connell – of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” fame
Adrienne Draper – author of “Dirty Dishes: Every Woman Has Them”
Hannah Mayer – who knows “poop happens”
Ellen Abramson – author of “Live to Dance”
Danielle Smith – social media maven mompreneur
Show times are 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Institute for Health Education at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield. Each attendee will receive a goodie bag, and those arriving an hour before each show will enjoy refreshments, live music, and even a bit of shopping for upscale resale goods by Mystique Boutique. Half of ticket proceeds will go to Connections to Success, which strives to break the cycle of poverty by providing services and training to enable economic independence. For more information and to purchase general admission tickets online, visit the Listen to Your Mother – St. Louis website. Some of the readings are rated PG-13 due to language and subject matter.
Director Ellie Grossman says, “The audience is multi-generational and the show appeals to men and women and older children. We are real moms with real stories, and that’s precisely what makes our show so much fun and relatable to everyone. You will walk away feeling happy, uplifted, and inspired!”
