The predicted mild storm didn’t materialize Wednesday in the Lake Tahoe region. Instead, the area got hit pretty hard, dumping more than a foot of snow at several Lake Tahoe ski resorts.
The good news results in quite the powder day for the first day of spring – Thursday (March 21). Skiing and snowboarding should be excellent.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort was the big winner on Wednesday, reporting up to 17 inches of snow. Homewood received 8 inches of new snow and Alpine Meadows got 7-10 inches. Heavenly was reporting 5 inches.
Sugar Bowl, Boreal Mountain Resort and Soda Springs, which are all located off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit, received 6-8 inches of new snow and 14 inches overall this week.
There is no snow in the forecast today or for the weekend. The daytime temperatures will return to the mid-40s and possibly hit the 50s from today through the weekend.
There was 2 inches of fresh snow at Squaw Valley this morning, where the resort will be hosting U.S. Alpine Championship begins today through Sunday. The planned events on Wednesday were postponed.
A strong field of skiers will include Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin. Squaw Valley will be well-represented with Olympians Julia Mancuso and youthful Travis Ganong.
