We’re back with the final four discussing what it’s like to be the final four: Danielle, Celeste, Ivan, and Genevieve. This is the final Nerd War. The contest involves the four players navigating the Maze of Terror, using Segways (pardon, “Nerd Movers”). The last contestant to make it through the maze is banished immediately. After mounting their Segways, it becomes clear there’s not a lot of “terror” in the Maze of Terror. The order is:
Ivan made a few tactical errors and unfortunately fell off his Segway. But he represented the tabletop game design industry exceptionally well as a leader, as someone with a sense of humor, and as a strong contestant in a variety of challenges. His farewell speech summed up his philosophy:
You know every nerd has been through some strife. My middle school years were rough. I had tortoise frame glasses and a neon green fanny pack that I kept all of my Kleenex and antihistamines in. But I’ve taken my nerdy elements and I’ve made it work for me. When I call myself a nerd I do it in a word of acceptance. The whole point of doing this is to let our nerdom shine. To raise the banner so to speak and say, “Hey, we are nerd and we are proud!” And that’s a beautiful thing.
It’s down to three women in the final phase of the Nerd War. They are asked trivia questions specific to nerd culture:
- Video Games
- Math & Logic
- Comic Books
The questions range from difficult to ludicrously difficult. The first two nerds to answer five questions correctly remain in competition for the crown, knocking out the third. Danielle is last but not least. All the former contestants are brought back to judge who will be the winner. Ivan gets in the last word:
I think it’s fitting that all the nerds come back and set judgment upon the two that are the last pick. Kings that are born into power normally fail, but it’s the ones that are brought into power by their own people that truly rule.
The entire gang spends another night in the house before deciding who will be the winner. Danielle does not take her loss well (but we knew this was coming). And after a night of lobbying, each of the finalists gets to make an argument. Genevieve goes first:
When I came here my goals were primarily to stay in the game and my secondary goal was to learn but interestingly the learning didn’t necessarily come from the challenges like I expected it would, it came from you guys. I learned that Dr. Moo has the best prescription for sadness. I learned that Team Bat is awesome, and I learned that my zombie apocalypse plan will probably fail, but I’m glad to know it. I took responsibility for being a leader of team Blextrophy. Ultimately I think being a leader is being a strong part of being a King of Nerds. I really hope you will give me this opportunity to rpove just how devoted I am to this and how much I really want to be a good ambassador.
Coming into this house I never thought I’d be standing here in front of you guys as the top two. The moment I saw everyone here I compared myself to all of you. I thought I wasn’t good enough and I thought I didn’t deserve to be here. And I struggled with self-confidence and I’ve struggled with what every nerd struggles in their life and it’s finally accepting who they are and representing their nerd-dom. I stand today in front of you as a really confident person, someone who is loving of herself, someone who is proud to be a nerd, and that it’s okay, and I can tell the young nerds out there, you may struggle, but you are who you are, and you need to learn to love yourself and you need to learn to accept yourself. I can’t tell you today how happy I am to finally accept being a nerd and being a representative for you guys.
And the votes are (total):
- Hendrik: Genevieve (1)
- Danielle: Celeste (1)
- Jon: Celeste (2)
- Brandon: Celeste (3)
- Ivan: Genevieve (2)
- Moogega: Genevieve (3)
- Alana: Celeste (4)
- Virgil: Celeste (5)
Celeste wins $100,000 and the right to sit atop the Throne of Games! After donning her crown, Celeste ascends to the throne, making her the first queen of King of the Nerds. Think you can do better? Give TBS your feedback with this survey.
The network has ordered eight episodes for the second season of King of the Nerds, with plans for the show to return in 2014.
