Most sports interviews are fairly predictable. But sometimes you hear things that just flat out surprise you. That happened to me this morning.
I was listening to the Mike Lupica Show on ESPN Radio and Lupica was interviewing The Logo, Jerry West. He asked West whether players played harder in his day and West said, “…It was dirtier then. Fighting and flagrant fouls were rampant.”
Somehow I never thought that was the case when I watched the NBA as a kid growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. But as I think about it, I’d have to say fights weren’t uncommon back then.
Were they more prevalent than they are today? I can’t say and I doubt that there is an easy way to find out.
But as surprising as West’s comment was, what Lupica said next was more surprising. He mentioned that West had played for the New York Lakers. Really???
I guess we all have moments when our mouths get ahead of our minds.
