Teen mom Jenelle Evans is in trouble with the law again. In her many seasons on MTV’s documentary series 16 &Pregnant and Teen Mom 2, Jenelle never seems to miss a run-in with the legal authorities. This time it’s big. Jenelle has been charged with possession of heroin and assualt. She has gone from the gateway drug marijuana to the hard core, severely addictive, street drug heroin. In the finale of the current season of Teen Mom 2 we see that Barbara, Jenelle’s mom, and Barbara’s boyfriend find heroin and syringes in the home that Jenelle, and on again off again boyfriend Kieffer share. In a desparate attempt to get through to her daughter, Barbara tries to have Jenelle committed.
These are the shows that teenagers and preteens are watching. CGK Mom Blog, written by a mom in Columbia, South Carolina speaks about using shows such as this, that are popular with today’s youth, to spark conversation about the issues that seem to be glamorized. As a parent, it is your responsibility to take the good and the bad moments of shows such as Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant and advise your children appropriately. From these shows you are able to pull out the fact that having children at a young age is not a fun thing to do. There are struggles, fears, and obstacles the moms on the shows face every day all because they made the decisions to be irresponsible with their sex lives. It feels very uncomfortable talking about teenagers and sex lives in the same sentence, but reality and society shows that the combination is not strange like we would like to think.
Gone is the day where sex is hidden from children until they are adults and married. Real conversations have to be had with children. CGK Mom Blog states today’s teens and preteens “are desensitized, overexposed, unsupervised and over-sexualized, all of the ingredients that create trouble.” This means parent have to be more involved and more open to address the hard topics. There are many programs, organizations, mentors, counselors, etc who are willing to help parents with these hard conversations. In today’ s society, education is key. The more education on topics such as sex, relationships, and drugs, will equip our children against the age old threats of peer pressure. If you are in the South Carolina area and you need help with talking to your child(ren) about topics such as sex, Teen Pregnancy SC can help. Need help talking about drug abuse and just saying no?
