Astute fans and writers have noticed that absence of outfielder Alex Castellanos from the Albuquerque Isotopes lineup on Monday and Tuesday.
The reason for that absence was assumed to be due to the possibility of a call-up by the Dodgers to take the roster spot of the injured Mark Ellis.
Those assumptions, however, proved incorrect as Castellanos was placed on the 7-day disabled list due to right forearm inflammation prior to Tuesday’s game.
“He’s got a little soreness in his forearm so we’re going to let it calm down a little bit,” manager Lorenzo Bundy said prior to the official DL announcement. “He could play, but we’re going to err on the safe side.”
Part of the reason behind putting Castellanos on the DL was it left a short bench even shorter on Monday. With only three bench players available, the Isotopes had to use Alfredo Amezaga as a pinch runner in the ninth inning and were forced to let relief pitcher Chris Withrow bat against Memphis reliever Jorge Rondon, who was wild. Rondon hit Withrow with a pitch, but luckily it was only a graze.
“I didn’t want to use him to run because he hadn’t prepared,” Bundy said of Castellanos. “With his history of hamstring injuries, I didn’t want him to run.”
Castellanos was hitting .304/.360/.481 with four home runs and 14 RBI through 21 games this season. His spot on the roster was taken by infielder Ozzie Martinez, who was activated from the DL. Martinez went 1-for-6 in two games earlier this season.
The Dodgers recalled right-hander Javy Guerra on Tuesday and sent reliever Josh Wall back to Albuquerque.
Guerra was 0-2 with a 4.02 ERA in four starts, striking out 16 batters in 15.2 innings. He will pitch out of the bullpen in Los Angeles.
Wall had one save and a 2.08 ERA in four appearances with the Isotopes before the Dodgers called him up on April 15. He allowed 14 runs in seven innings in Los Angeles, including a rough outing Monday in which he threw 62 pitches in two innings.
The Isotopes’ rotation was not affected as rehabbing Dodgers lefty Chris Capuano will start Wednesday in Guerra’s usual spot.
