Bonner Animal Rescue, Inc. (BAR) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization. It was started in early 2010 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to see changes in their community. Through their efforts they have made changes to the city ordinances in Bonner Springs, Kansas. They are saving animal lives every day and managed to save over 200 animals last year alone. Bonner Animal Rescue has a small shelter location and does events at various locations around Bonner Springs. BAR has several wonderful animals waiting for forever homes. A few of them are highlighted in this article and included in the slideshow.
In 2012 Bonner Animal Rescue became committed to changing the policies regarding holding periods for stray animals in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Before BAR became involved animals were only being held for 3-4 days and then euthanized if not claimed Since March of 2012 animals are held for 5 days and then transferred to BAR. Only mortally injured or aggressive animals are euthanized, which means that BAR effectively turned Bonner Springs into a no kill community!
After a great record of lifesaving last year they have a big job ahead to continue that progress. BAR holds regular fundraisers and adoption events at several area locations to help them continue with their work. They are planning an open house and low cost spay neuter event in June to help give back to the community.
BAR has so many wonderful animals for adoption that we couldn’t pick just 3. Check out the list to see some of their cuties.

For some reason it seems that the media has decided that negative news is more important than good news. Pay attention…even in the animal rescue news column there will be hundreds of stories of bad rescues, bad owners, neglected pets, etc but very few stories of the people who are performing good deeds every day.
It is time for this to change. For the next 6 months the focus of these articles will be positive stories about:
· dogs who were saved and the people who saved them
· rescues who work hard and tirelessly to save needy animals
· people who open their hearts and homes to these animals in need

Chi Chi is an adorable black and white long-haired cat with such cute markings on her face. “Chi Chi is 2 years old. Her owners were deployed from Fort Leavenworth and they were not able to take her. She has needed special foster care since being left behind was quite traumatic for her. She is a beautiful girl, petite and front paws declawed. If interested in adopting Chi Chi, contact her foster mommy, Heather, at 913-209-2330.”
Buddy is a Bichon Frise Poodle mix. “8 yrs old. Male; neutered.Fully house-trained. Just had complete exam, and he is in excellent health. He is heart worm negative. Bichon Poodle mix is one of the lowest shedding dogs known. He came to Bonner Animal Rescue when his owner of 8 years had to go into a nursing home. Buddy is very calm and docile. He seems to get along with cats, as he was non-reactive with cats that approached him at the shelter. He gets along with dogs, as his ex-owners had visiting dogs from time to time. He likes attention and plays fetch…when he feels like it.” Email Katie or call her at 913-963-4656 for more info.
Katrina is a beautiful black and white longhaired cat. “Katrina is sweet and gentle. She loves attention and is the quintessential lap cat. She was left behind when her owners moved from their home. Some caring neighbors helped by feeding her and making sure she had a warm place to stay. Now Katrina is at our shelter and awaiting her new, permanent home. For more information about adopting Katrina, contact Bonner Rescue at 913-449-7328.”
Snoop is a 7-8 year old Chihuahua mix. “Snoop is a 7-8 year old Mexican Chihuahua mix. He is super all around. He is great with cats, dogs and kids. He is totally house trained. He is super sweet and very very mellow. He just goes with the flow. He would be a great family dog. He is about 15 pounds and super super cute.” Email Katie or call her at 913-963-4656 for more info.
Suki is a little black kitten. “We don’t know why black cats get such a bad rap. Suki (meaning: “love” in Japanese) is such a sweetheart. And, that’s a huge statement since she was born and spent the first several weeks of her life in the walls of an unoccupied apartment complex. She never knew human touch or affection. She was very fearful when she first came to her foster mommy’s home with her sister (Mitzy). She is about 4 months old now and a completely different kitty. Though still a bit shy and cautious when around new people, she warms up and will bond with her special “person”. Right now she spends hours on the lap of her foster mommy and soaks up all the attention she can get. Suki’s perfect home would be a quieter one, but she would LOVE another cat friend to keep her company. She is very much still a baby. Suki loves to play hard and then crash for a long lap nap. She is soft spoken and quiet. If you would like to meet Suki, give her foster mommy a call at 913-220-3886 or Bonner Animal Rescue at 913-449-7328.”
Bomber is a baby lab mix pup. “Bomber is our newest member. He is a 12 week old lab mix. He is current on his booster shots for his age but will need one more round of boosters and will need to be neutered when he is ready. He is great with kids and other dogs. He has not been around cats. He is doing good on potty training but will need a family to continue to work on this. He is playful and loves to be around you. Sweet puppy!” Would you like more information? Email Katie or call her at 913-963-4656 for more info.
Ruthie appears to be a grey and white domestic short-haired cat. “Ruthie is two years old. She was surrendered by her owner because, after losing his job, financially he could no longer afford to care for his animals. She is petite and sweet, but very shy. She needs a quiet home where she can build her confidence and show her true personality. Ruthie is spayed and fully vetted. If you would like to meet Ruthie, call Bonner Rescue at 913-449-7328.”
Shadow is a young boxer mix. “This fun loving girl thinks everyday is a party! Her new home must have a fenced yard so she can have lots of outdoor play time. Shadow has so much energy, a family with older children would be best. Her best friend is Shelby (another shelter dog), but could do well with another playful dog companion. No cats though. Contact Bonner Animal Rescue if you are interested in meeting Shadow (913) 963-4656”
Twinkle Toes is a tabby kitty who is looking for her new person to come adopt her. “Picture perfect Twinkle Toes is waiting to meet her new best friend. This cuddly girl has a wonderful disposition and would be an excellent family kitty or loyal companion for a single person. She has to have some teeth removed due to some gum issues. But once her gums heal, she will be just fine. Right now she is enjoying her treats of soft food and tender morsels. If you would like to meet Twinkle Toes, give us a call at 913-449-7328.”
Shelby – ADOPTED!
Update…Shelby has been adopted!
Shelby is a hound mix who has a neglected past but a bright future. “Shelby is as precious and sweet as can be. We got her a few weeks back when she was dumped in a ditch. She has put on weight, has since been spayed and is doing SUPER. She loves people, other dogs and has been great with the kids she has been around. She is very submissive and doesn’t want to start any problems. Because she was neglected, it takes a little bit of time for her to do new things. Once she masters them and knows she is okay, she does great. She used to be afraid to get in the cars and now she jumps right in the back seat and loves car rides. She is such a special and deserving dog. She needs a patient family who will help her learn to trust and know new things are okay and she is safe. I LOVE this dog. She is a hound mix, about 2 years old and about 40-45 pounds.” Would you like more information? Email Katie or call her at 913-963-4656 for more info.
