May has been officially declared as the “Interviewing the Indies” month. As such, all month there will be posts containing interviews with indie authors. Today’s guest is Larry Kollar, author of several adult and young adult novels and novellas.
What do you have published?
White Pickups: “Legends are ordinary people who stepped up and did what had to had to be done.” Paranormal, adult. The sequel and conclusion is scheduled for late-April launch.
Accidental Sorcerers: “There are other kinds of magic.” The first in a series of YA fantasy novellas, about two apprentice sorcerers and their clumsy mentor.
The Crossover: Fantasy novella, not YA-specific but okay for most. Set in the same world as Accidental Sorcerers, but 800 years earlier. Two heroes are thrown into a world where nothing is familiar… at first.
Xenocide: Soft SF/detective novelette. A suburban cop has to solve the strangest case of his career, while pursuing a good-looking EMT.
What are you currently working on?
Pickups and Pestilence: sequel and conclusion to White Pickups – scheduled for late-April release.
Water and Chaos: second Accidental Sorcerers story – release planned for late May or early June.
The Sorcerer’s Daughter: third Accidental Sorcerers story – in progress, release planned for later in 2013.
Into the Icebound: fourth Accidental Sorcerers story – just started, release date not set at this time.
How do you stay motivated?
Once a story gets hold of me, it’s hard to ignore it. The characters bounce around in my head until I let them out.
What has been the most challenging aspect of being an indie author?
Juggling my day job and family needs with my need to write. I have a 3-year-old grandson who wants attention, in-laws living nearby, and a need for sleep.
As a writer, what is the one thing you cannot live without? Why?
My MacBook. I write using a variety of methods – paper notebooks, phone (with paired keyboard), directly into the computer – but all of them are collected into the laptop before the first draft is done.
