According to multiple reports, including Sherdog.com, Swedish light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson may be forced off of this weekend’s UFC on Fuel TV 9 card.
At 15-1 Gustafsson was expected to face Gegard Mousasi in the main event of the card and potentially stake his claim as the number one contender in the 205 pound weight class. A laceration occured in what has been deemed a “freak accident” during Gustafsson’s Sunday training session and now the question hangs as to whether or not he will be cleared before the fight this weekend.
Gustafsson is riding a six fight win streak since losing to Phil Davis back at UFC 112 in 2010. The UFC currently has him ranked in the second position behind Lyoto Machida but this bout could have catapulted him over the former champion.
Gegard Mousasi was set to make his UFC debut after competing in multiple organizations within the sport. The former DREAM and Strikeforce champion is 33-3-2 with nearly a decade of competition under his belt despite being just 27 years old.
If the main event falls apart and the UFC can not find a suitable replacement that would bump Ross Pearson and Ryan Couture up to the top of the card. The UFC has not made a statement in reference to the injury so ideas of a replacement are still up in the air.
